Every year for the last four years my 2002 TD5 ( 73,000 miles )fails the mot on the smoke test !! The garage then change the fuel filter and the air filter then rev the guts out of it and it passes. The problem is that it's only done 5,500 ( my usual yearly average )since the last test and it don't seem right to have the filters changed at such low mileage.Any ideas if I can add something to the fuel or any other ideas.I have tried charging up the motorway in 3rd gear prior to her going in for the test. Cheers.

Make sure the engines hot before you drop it off, give it a proper workout before

Red-x will help in the fuel

Is this just a little earner for the garage without having to do anything too difficult I wonder? I dunno. Perhaps they can't alter the emissions results.

Doing only 5000 miles per year, I imagine short journeys at low speeds, perhaps not often getting the engine up to operating temperature. Do you have another car - hence the low mileage? If so, towards MOT time, use the Disco more and give it a few long run-outs. Or change the filters before it goes for the MOT. Or use another test station.

It most probably will be as come MOT you'll just agree with what they say to get it through

I do less miles than you a year in my 300tdi and it passes fine, no cat either

Just kick the arse out of it just before you take it for test i've never failed(i'm a mot tester btw) a diesel after giving them a run up the road to give them a clear out, you need to get it up near the limiter for a proper clearout!!

Oi likes to ring the ****e outta my cars before delivering it for MOT time I always use STP all round fuel treatment before MOT rather than Redex
