yep... I gave up and sent it off to the garage.. looks fairly easy in the rave cd then you start and realise every single thing that needs taking apart has been there for 10 years and is in a god awful place to get to...

Follow the rave instructions but you do not have to remove the oil filter mounting. Just remove the actual filter and then lift the chassis up, this will create enough room to get the box out and the new one back in.
Getting the steering wheel shaft off the box can be a problem. You must remove the bolt holding the coupling to the input shaft as it fits into a groove just loosening it will not do. I then soaked the shaft in wd40 and tapped it up the wheel shaft with a small hammer.
The first box I fitted, took about three hours, this had a leak, however the second one went on in about 20 minutes.
Also you do not need to use the LR recommended green fluid at £22 per ltr. auto gearbox red stuff is fine.

I have a slight weep on the seal beneath the control arm, uses about an 1/2 an egg cup full of Dextron 3 in a month. Is the common thought the seal option is not worth it? How can I tell if there is resulting wear as the TD5 Disco behaves normally. Advice welcome.
You can't tell if there is wear that would stop the seals from 'sealing', without having a look at the shaft with the box out.
It seems, having googled, that rust seems to eat the sealing faces, among other things, causing them to leak.
I'll be getting a recon box at some point in the future.
As your leak is so small, it MIGHT be worth trying some PAS anti-leak additive, to buy you a bit of time.

Looking at the price you could be right. Ultimately its new box time but I will chance a delay tactic as it gives me a chance to save up for a paddocks recon box.

All the reading I,ve done, and all the people I,ve spoken to about the seal kit say the same thing,,,, " dont bother ". They say it " might work " ,but, " probably wont ".
I found this. ( I hope I have,nt broken a forum rule ).

I have that link Del, it is very good, combine it with Urban Panzers tip on raising the chasis to gain access tot he bolts and it may not be too horrific a job
