ACR Automotive do a 2.8 'bore out' of the 2.5 engine and claim 117 BHP.

or a tuned 220 turbo lump, you might get 120 out of your serties with std box and disco diff then, you may need to keep a stock pile of gear boxes, diffs and halfshafts tho

not a bad lump and would be fun how hard to connect to series box but the reason i was asking was i wanted to keep it original ish but the engine needs a complete rebuild, its running on 3 cylinders thats not a problem but the compression it soo low on all cylinders, its sucking worse than a back ally whore, missfireing and backfiring, and one of the bottem end shells is spinning, so rebuild time.

The 200 lump is a T-series engine and is in fact the MPi engine fitted to the MPi Discovery. Two things to remember, the Series is lighter than the Discovery and the MPi didn't have a turbo........look out for a Rover 220 Coupe in a breaker yard.
I seriously doubt that fitting that engine into a Series is all that hard to do.....especially given what I said above
As for the 2.8 from ACR. I understand that the 2.25 to 2.5 is in fact a lengthening of the stroke of the engine, which in itself will give a little more torque. I would assume that ACR do that and an over bore to get to 2.8.
However, most of these gains, including porting, cam profiles etc only really come into play at higher revs and that kind of defeats the object (IMHO )
I bet you would find that a well rebuild 2.25 (5 bearing perferably) with an SU carb, 9:1 head and electronic ignition would be a revelation against a standard unit and will still be very tractable off-road.......

i've an apparently bored to the max 2 1/4, running a weber and no head gasket (just gasket glue), it always had a good bit of go about it compaired to my other petrol landy (but then that could also be down to many other factors i suppose) also, before its electrical system failed in every way possible, it would start almost instantly after turning the key!!
as andyb said, a well rebuilt standard engine and drivetrain would probably make all the difference!!

Just fitting a through box silencer makes a big difference.... Talk to Roland at ACR like Andyb suggests. The basic 2.25 is a sound engine that is underutilised, you can tweak it quite a bit before you even have to re-bore. I have gone down the ACR route, but only gone as far as I can without notifying the insurance folks. If you go the whole way you can get much more power than I have, but bear in mind. If you have more power and you are still using a chocolate gearbox, you still won't get the power to the road.

According to one US web page the cam from the 2.5 petrol will fit and give 'better top end torque with no loss at the bottom end.' Who do folk recommend for an after market exhaust?

If you go and try to buy a 2.25 cam you will be sold a 2.5 cam as the 2.25 cam is NLA
IIRC Another trick was to fit a 2.25 diesel cam. You will need to check lift and duration figures tho'.

Can you really get 15BHP from buying a "Stage" 2.1 head for the series engine? Or are those optimisitc figures and need other things alongside to get that? Because another 15BHP...well...that to me would be competitive to getting a 200Di but less effort!

ACR are still making components from new I think.... That is certainly my understanding, you will need to ask how many races he wins. He has always done well, but then entering with a 2.25 against V8's is always gonna be interesting.

I wasn't suggesting that Roland doesn't win; I was trying to illustrate the point that raw BHP figures are not the whole story
