Hi could some one tell me is the electrical socket on the housing is this the sender to the tempreture gauge/ i take it the thermostat is wax operated / if wax thermostat is faulty can you replace just this in the housing .

No....the L322 M62 4.4 uses an electricaly heated thermostat....

The principle of operation is that during low load, crusing etc the stat is only partially open, this has the effect of warming the engine up to enhance fuel burn and efficency....during high load, the ECU heats the thermostat element which opens the stat further to enahnce cooling during high load/ high rev situations....I will attach the operation details in a mo....

And the unit is a complete unit, I will find a photo...

AA man said it was wax operated thank you for your reply you are so help full tempreture gauge is not going up on car wich is making me suspect may be pressure cap on exspansion tank as tighten up really tight seems no leak at tank is there quite a lot of pressure when hot /

Pressure cap will not stop the gauge going up. Sounds like the temperature sensor for the gauge is faulty, have a look in RAVE for details:)
