sorry cant get pics on ill try and explain, rocker cover off turning car over and vapour coming from valve spring area, possible bent valve? so took the head off and one of the metal rings on the gasket (near the edge)had been doubled over twice,as if they had been sqeezing the gasket in and its caught and rolled itself up is that any better?

Don't know, cannot work blind you understand. I take it this was the head gasket? If the curl was near the edge i would not think that could cause it. Poured some paraffin into the ports and see if it ****es out of a valve.

i will do, sorry about my explanation im hopeless at it if you seen it you would know right away what im on about

are we talking a reinforcement/sealing ring on the gasket is bent up? Does it line up woth a bolt hole or something else? Doesn't sound good!

I agree it does sound a cockup. But unless there is a very big blow cylinder to cylinder it ain't going to cause a spitback through the inlet.

yes metal sealing ring bent over twice, but today covered valves with parafin (cheers wamers) and it ****ed out two center ones and very very slowly out the others i presume this is my problem

Well considering the head has been skimmed i think you said. Surely they will have had the valves out and ground them. I can only think they have not depressed the tappets and you have had piston strikes that have bent the valves.

well the head shines like a shilling but the valves look as though they have never seen the light of day, valves getting done tomorrow hopefully how do you depress the tappets

Take them out and squeeze them in a vice (slowly) until oil is forced from them and they shrink in size. Make sure they go back where they came from don't mix them up. When you start engine run it at 1500/2000 rpm until they go quiet. Job done.
I find it f**king unbelievable that they have had head skimmed and not done valves.

would you not have to strip the head to skim it?(thanks for the info on the tappets pal) im beggining to think they have fannied the head up to look skimmed

No not if the valves don't protrude beyond the head surface. It's seriously bad practice to remove a head and NOT grind valves and fit stem seals though in my view.

wammers you were spot on one of the exhaust valves bent i should have seen the scratch on the top the piston so i imagine the last mob didnt push the tappets in,on that subject do you just use maybe a small socket on the end of it when its in the vice, how far should it go in

The small socket will work fine. Just squeeze them gently - remember the oil only has tiny hole to escape out of. They will only compress about 1/4 to 1/2 inch but that is more than enough to allow them adjust properly when you fire her up. Remeber to keep the revs up around 2000rpm until they stop rattling - this might take 10-20 mins.

thats brill jt thats how far they went in,im still waiting on my rave disc arriving thats why im asking all the questions, that said ye canny beat hands on knowledge

well head is back on done everything to the letter {i think}valves re-seated,faced and still the exact same so back to the ignition leads again could one of you nice people confirm or correct this for me please right bank standing at the front of the car 1,3,5,7and left 2,4,6,8 and coil pack reads from left to right 2,3,4,7,8,5,6,1 then connect the leads 1 to 1 2 to 2 etc...and would the crank sensor cause this mis fire thanks in advance

still no further forward took the other head off bit of a mess took it for re facing and the guy said the gasket had been leaking in three places i thought good thats the problem put it back on this morning and no change,so im at a loss

had enough and got a second hand engine pulled the engine and found a core plug out on the bellhousing side and one on the drivers side then thought i would have a look at the pistons and loosened the bolts and went to give them a we tap to help them out and they flew out the cylinders every single ring stuck solid no matter now its getting binned new engine in and started fine thanks everyone

Was a compression test not suggested very early in this saga. Obviously you never did one.
