Over the last couple of days ive noticed an annoying rattling sound coming from underneath my 1996 110 300tdi.

It only seems to happen when I lift off the accelerator pedal. But as soon as I press the clutch pedal down the rattling stops, so is this clutch/gearbox related?

Its ok when driving along at a constant speed, or accelerating. But as soon as I lift off the gas, the rattling starts.

Any ideas?

I would check the props, also could be related to engine loading, exhaust rattle? which would stop when the clutch was pushed in as the engine would then stop tilting to the side when loaded or acting as a brake which then tilts it the other way.

Check yer exhaust rubbers.. if they're knackered then they'll be knockin' on the rear mud flap bracket etc

It was the rear UJ on the rear prop on my 90 when it was doing exactly what you have said. Easy check is after a run feel how hot the UJ's are. They should not be hot at all. The knackered one on my 90 was too hot to touch and could be moved around but only after we released the handbrake.

Thanks, ill have a crawl underneath and do some checks.

I recall my mechanic saying I might need a UJ replacing next time I see him. Sounds like he might be right.
