Hi all. Iv seen a thread on here before but the search ain't working so can't find it.

I have a bit of rotten metal on me chassis and I have a few days off next week so fancy tackling it.

It is mostly surface rust and some worse but no holes. What is the best thing to do with this? Clean it, remove any serious rust, treat, prime, paint? What are the best products out there?

clean off what you can and attack whats left with jenolite then waxoyl is what i'd do also have a bloody good poke around with a small hammer and get rid of as much rust as possible first ,rust is like cancer it just keeps contaminating everything around it on the chassis ,if it sound like a dull thud you may need welding ,if it rings when you tap it it's probably ok .

Hit it with a club hammer. See what comes off.

There may well be holes, and even if something feels solid, it may be too thin to weld to.

Certainly clean it to see as much as possible how bad it is.

If there are holes, clean up around them and plate over it. It has to be welded all the way around the plate.

If you're lucky enough not to need welding then at least get off the surface rust and think about some underseal.

don't be afraid to whack it either,if it's weak enough to damage with a hammer it ain't strong enough to do it's job,if your'e at all suspicious then i'd plate it up .better safe than sorry.

Awesome. I'll have a poke around next week. Is it not worth painting the chassis?

Mine (1994 Defender 90) had a sound chassis but a good covering of surface rust - some of whcih was flaky!

Cleaned up with wire brushes (using drill and air tool attachments), then degreased, treated and then painted using the KBS Rustseal Product (POR15 very very similar)

Then finished off by spraying ankor wax in all the box sections

Took a bit of effort, but not horribly expensive (about £150 for materials) and 6 hours work

Was certainly worth while, as the KBS leaves a very hard scratch proof surface, and being black looks better as well
