Just a thought but I think a sprinter engine would be good in a defender as they have loads of grunt, good on fuel and reliable.

Has anyone done it??

No but I've often wondered about fitting a mercedes 817 vario's ecotec engine to a defender.

Not done it but I did consider it a while back. My mate had the 2l td in his sprinter, when it went bang we managed to source a 3.0l or maybe even 3.2l from a sprinter ambulance. It towed car trailers brilliantly and didn't abuse the fuel too much.

I cant remember what he did to it but he played about with the engine affter the swap and my god that thing shifted...

Yeah they are fast!!!
And if you buy a written off one it won't cost alot.

What does it need to run?

And they sit at 90mph all day long so doing 70-80 in a landy would be plenty

I cant remember if it needs an ECU etc, he fitted it when I wasn't there.

The reason I decided against it was either engine shape/height or trying to make it mate with the gearbox and a distinct lack of fabrication equipment/skills.

Would go very well with a disco T-box methinks!
