Cockernee, Pasty munchin bastid.
where the front prop exits.
just changed the oil an all - still, it's nice clean EP90 on me drive.
looks quite bad, so I guess I need to change the oil seal.

never done it before - any pitfalls? any special tools needed? any tips? anyfing else I should change while I'm at it?

all advice gratefully received.

Is the transfer box output that the propshaft is attached to nice and tight, or does it wiggle around when try and move it?

Not a big job mate,of with the front prop(mark the shaft flanges and axle and transfer box flanges so it goes back in the same place),undo the transfer box flange center nut, pull of the flange, pull of the oil seal sheild, prize out the old seal, clean the flange off ,make sure theres no dirt or damage where the seal runs, tap the new seal in square(lip inwards)untill it just touches the bearing circlip, put back the oil seal sheild, put some clean oil on the output shaft where the oil seal runs and on the inside end of it, push it in on refit the centre nut ,tighten to132lb/ft or179Nm,re fit the prop.

cheers Sean
dun't look too bad, just to do the seal.

one of the links says the up to 4mm play in the bearing is normal. is that true? - seems excessive to me.

it's a roller rather than a ball type bearing so i think they are supposed to have a bit - 4-6 mm sounds about right for that size of bearing

Gonna jump in on this one chaps as i got the same leak, Do you need a torque wrench for this sean?

Hi guys - onne thing to check is wear on the flange - if it is damaged because of the seal, you might need to replace the flange. If it is only minor wear, it is possibly to clean it up with very fine wet n dry.

is that your subtle way of saying "i havent got a torque wench am i finally going to have to go out and buy one" ?
Ok ok you found me out:D Icould always borrow one i spose as i aint had me arms callibrated in a year or two:D

When I did mine fost time I got the seal from Haddocks an it only lasted a couple of weeks, so I did it again with a decent seal from a bearing an seal place an it's still ok. I wunt fancy having 4 mm of radial play on the bearing. If it's end float then it sounds like the taper roller needs looking at further down the shaft you need to take the box out fer that an check it with a spring balance an stuff. It's still a matter of taking the box out to do the roller bearing.
