I have sat nav but can't see how to clean the map - looks ok to me!

as wammers once said something like the air ratio etc will change and it takes a few trips for the ecu to learn the new values. or something like that my notes on it are very old.
One thing I do know do not use electrical cleaner. some bloke was using wd40?? loads of posts on the subject. And yes it will come out or clean in situ.
Should also look at idle control valve for a clean.

Yes if it's full of oil it may inhibit it's readings. Spray a little contact cleaner into it and a gentle blow with an air line may help. NO strong solvents. Of course diagnostics would tell you if it's working.

Think you are talking petrol engines here. On the diesel duff readings from the MAF if fitted can cause the ECU to misinterpret air conditions and activate the EGR at the wrong time causing power loss. But the air flow as measured through the MAF has no direct effect on fuelling as it does on the petrol engine.
