more control. auto lag is bad. easier mechanics. dont want an autobox failing on you if your overlanding.

i voted manual

i would have said the same as griff till i went on a Landrover Experience course in an auto.

i was thinking there would be more controll with an auto 'coz u dont have to worry bout cluch. if ur boots are muddy do u get any troubles with feet slipping off pedals? ie the clutch?

havent used an auto offroad but when i did the 3peaks challenge in our hired volvo xc70 (which was auto) i didnt get on with the lag when overtaking. auto is GREAT for cruising and motorway work, but i wouldnt want one as an everyday car and i dont think i would enjoy one offroad either.

V8 with an auto box is great for off-roading for things like trials and challenge events, but not an overland expedition. I know one chap who has a 5 litre TVR engine mated to a Rangie 4 speed box with Jaguar J-gate changer so you can drive as a semi-auto if you want. Pretty unstoppable machine ;)
