Hi Guys, I was wondering if it is necessary to have a gearbox oil cooler on my p38 2.5 with a manual gearbox as I don't tow heavy loads with the car and its not doing heavy work like thrashing over the Alps or anything. It just seems a bit unnecessary on a car that is not working hard, any ideas please.

LR never fit anything that's not needed, they are too bloody tight.

Thanks Datatek, It's just that on my old classic 200 tdi with an LT77 gearbox it didn't have an oil cooler on the gearbox and I dont think a discovery with an R380 gearbox has an oil cooler so why does my p38 with an R380 gearbox have a gearbox oil cooler fitted?

Maybe because the car weighs 2.5 tonnes? Or they had problems in the earlier cars.
Removing it sounds like a totally pointless excercise to me.

Yeah well the car is running fine at the moment and I'll leave everything as it is but I just wondered why it had been fitted as standard. Maybe they were fitted in case the cars were exported to hot countries where a gearbox oil cooler may be necessary. Anyway thanks for your thoughts.

Couldn't agree more with Datatek.

Considering how fragile these gearboxes are I'd leave it. I live in constant fear that it'll packup at an inopportune moment!

The internal pump has to push oil somewhere, around the cooler seems a reasonable place for it to go. You can't just blank it, it has to be returned to box.

Thanks guys for your replies, I just wondered how necessary the oil cooler was and if I ever get problems with split oil pipes or whatever I might remove it but the cars running great at the moment so I'll just leave everything alone.
