Done a quick 10 mile run at, er, 70ish ;) And then up a big hill just to strain it.

Everything seems ok.

I can hear the turbo whistle at between 1200-2000 rpm, after that I can't hear it anymore, I guess thats coz the engine drowns it out. But its only a faint whistle when I can hear it.

Some progress: Halfords have "verbally" agreed to foot the bill. "Get the work done and then claim it back off us" what the way the put it over the phone.

So, would you bother with all the hassle of getting it in to a garage? Insist on a new turbo? Have this one inspected? Or just leave it...

Your advice would be appreciated. What would you do...?

Nik

I'd get the Halfords offer in writing before I went any further.
A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Well if they pay up it is a free turbo and service. Can't be a bad thing. :p

I've got legal cover with the RAC so I'll give them a bell. If I leave it and the turbo goes bang in 6 months or 12 months time, I'll always wish I'd had it looked at...

Still, on the bright side, an interesting day and cleaning the intercooler was on my "to do" list anyway! :)

If the intercooler was very dirty you may put your MPG up a touch, but don't expect miracles.

After my fun and games today and having to strip the air intake system, when I got to the turbo intake hose, it was loose - as in no circlip on it, only just on to the extent it fell off when I moved it and oil everywhere. The car certainly feels more responsive now. But then I did also use snake oil to de-coke it too - and when you've had an incident I guess imagination comes in to play as well.

Talking of which, you clearly aren't a fan of snake oils, but my hobby is boats and Mercury marine (the major engine manufacturer) recommend their Quicksilver PowerTune to de-coke the engine on a yearly basis. Same sort of thing, you squirt it in to the air intake (being careful not to lose part of the can), leave it to work its magic and then give it a blast. So I figured 10K Boost would do a similar job??

Of course, I now wish I hadn't bothered, but who knew? :)

It's gone up a touch. Admitedly its a short run, but so far its up a couple of mpg. But it might not have been the intercooler. Yeah at some silly price you'd have been as well spraying water into it.

I was always told that just adding a few litres of petrol with a tank full of derv every now and then for a similar result but for much less money. But with the added bonus of cleaning your injectors too. Only tried it a few times on my van and didn't really notice any difference.

Mercury outboards are (or were) two strokes, the exhaust ports coked up. Not quite the same as a diesel. It was always better to strip them and clean properly anyway.:)
