I've bought a 1986 truck cab in excellent condition, but I'm a complete novice in the world of Land Rovers. I'd like some tips on the kind of routine maintenance that is required to keep my vehicle in its current good state. What are the kind of jobs which should be done weekly/monthly/less often?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to keep on top of things....

What you guna use it for?

Engine oil+filter, fuel filter, air filter
Diff oils
Gbox Tbox oils
Grease anything with a grease nipple

Thats the basics.
 
what engines in it .....

if its a daily driver check oil and water daily ....

if its a weekend toy - check the oil and water before each use ....

on a side note - does anyone find the more they use it the better economy they get .... i did a service on mine - then my van insurance company ****ed up and ive had to use the landy for a 60mile round trip commute - started at 17mpg calculated against a full tank fill up - now getting 30mpg ! - blowing all the ****e out the engine :D

Yes, surprised it wasn't mentioned before.
Having one to hand saves having to post a question and wait for an answer everytime you need to know something.:D In my opinion it should be the first thing an owner buys when looking to get a vehicle as they familerise you with the vehicle even before you begin the joys of ownership.

i dont know what haynes says but from alot of experience i would change all oils at least once a year and allways axles ,swivels after wading water above axles

Thanks for all the tips as well, its good to see sound advice offered when so many people on here seem to receive (not very) witty one-liners to their enquiries attempting to belittle the inexperienced Landy owner, but serving only to make the author look small-minded and smug.

Surely if more people are to become enthusiasts then we need all the help we can get from existing experts, and here is the place to ask?

The Haynes book is great, especially for the routine maintenance stuff, but the crucial photos always seem to be tiny, smudgy and black & white so that you can't actually see what it's of. Also, they tend to assume a fair amount of knowledge - e.g. "Check crankcase breather hose for security & condition" - OK, where is it? Picture or diagram please!

The official LR workshop manual will fill in the gaps there; you can get copies online if you hunt around.

I also like Phil Sheredan's workshop DVDs: Landroverworkshopdvd | Workshop Manual | Fitting Instructions

The service one is great as he takes you round the car doing all the inspection and lubrication and films every nut and bolt. Very helpful for us novices. Also, unlike the Haynes writers, he never has the special tool, so almost all problems are solved with a big hammer.
