Hello again all,

Whilst wandering around Tescos yesterday I noticed they have half price sale on Castrol Magnatec 10-40 engine oil (7 quid a bottle down from 14. Can't remember the size now, might have been 1 litre?). I'm going to need a service in the next month or so anyway so thought it may be worth bulk buying some.

Question is; is this stuff actually worth it or any better than standard stuff which was 6 quid? Any mechanics or engine gurus on here I welcome your comments....

edit: just noticed that amazon do a 4 litre one for 21 quid - seems the small bottles are very uneconomical way to buy oil!!
 
i would ring up your local unipart,andrew page etc ,local trade motor factors and ask price of 20l of suitable oil, more than adequate and what youd get anywhere else in a service
 
Its a 2l can and by conincidence I just changed the oil in my bmw today using my stock of that very oil so as it takes 8l I have just orderd 4 cans from tesco for a total cost of £34. Thats bloody cheap, its was £28 for a 4l can in halfuds the other day!

I have always been a castrol man and magnatec is good for short trips I do, but I was worried by somone recnetly saying it holds any swarf in the oil and turns it into cutting compound- what do we think any merrit in that point?

would there beany swarf in a ultra well maintained modern bmw engine?- that goes for yours too eh voguely? :D
 
I use it in my 4.6 LPG'd P38 that has 118k on it, and it runs sweet. Been in for nearly a year and just back from towing my caravan from Dover to the New Forest and back plus lots of running around and no problems.
 
Following our conversation the other day Voguely, Re: service over here in Corfu (by the way it was me you saw over here back in April, don't know if you saw my last post) I bought my oil yesterday, without the same joy that your having in terms of price.

I went to 9 or 10 petrol stations in search of a good quality oil in a larger container size, in the end the best I could do was Castrol Edge 5w-30, only available in 1 litre containers, cost me 18 euros per unit, total 162 euros for 9 litres!!! (approx 150 quid!!!)

Never have I wished so much for a local Tesco!!

Jesus H Christ and we talk about rip off Britain. That is bloody horrendous.
How can the Greek ecomomy be knackered charging prices like that. They should all be driving around in Rollers.

Anybody who pays £7.00 a litre for engine oil let alone the £14.00 a litre before offer price, seriously wants their bumps feeling.
 
ud be better off coming here for a holiday and take a couple of years worth of oil back dave!

Sadly Wammers, you've got no choice here they've got you over a barrel.... That is unless you fancy filling up your Range Rover with that well known brand of oil 'Motor Special' the label on it looked like it was a design from 1979!! and what's more it probably was!!

No..... If anyone is heading out to anywhere in Europe this year, particularly Greece, prepare to pay through the nose and every other orifice for that matter!!
 
last time I looked at the chaeper stuff it didnt even have a spec on it, cant be good.

I have to say though I have been doing a lot of reading on classic rover v8 forums recently and world wide its widly held that castrol isnt much good for the rv8 , as it sludges up. they reckon pennzoil is the way forward.

My 72 rrc runs the cheaper comma stuff but is changed every 3k and the spec on it still exceeds the handbook.

On the bmw I struggle to be confident of the cheaper oils and I push that motor to the redline alot!

Way to go Fett mate. Cheap oil more often is good enough. Why don't people realise that the vehicles that do the most mileage and are worked hardest in the country. The transport section. Run on cheap fleet oil, not the expensive fancy designer stuff Kevin prefers for his Corsa. If it's good enough for Scania it's good enough for me. They can stick the fancy stuff.
 
i suppose it may be like some parents ,neglect the kids for most of the year thinking spending alot at christmas will compensate ,if serviced professionaly fleet oil is what it would get and more than adequate,why not listen to wammers he obviously answers every bodies problems without question but come to oil or such people do question proves advertising is more powerful than sense
 
I agree with Wammers on this one, fleet oil is perfectly good enough, commercial vehicle engines can and do run for almost 24 hours a day if driven by 2 or 3 drivers in a day.

I've always used the "available oil", never had any problems, one of my ex-bosses even used the fleet oil in his Aston Martin and that never had an easy time...

As long as the oil meets the specification listed by the manufacturer, there is not a problem.

Castrol are masters of marketing hype with fancy adverts and promises.
What would you do if in a foreign country with the oil level on the dipstick at low and Castrol is not availible ??? The service station says "We have Shell, Mobil, Texaco, Total, Caltex etc. etc." Tell them it's all crap and drive on ???
