Hi all
Tried putting my p38 in low range last nite for the first time, i pulled up to a standstill, selected neutral, depressed clutch, pressed button, the range light on the dash flashed then gave me the select neutral message, am i doin something wrong? any help greatly appreciated

No, it always tells you to select neutral, otherwise, it wont let you select hi or lo, bung her in neutral, then select, same deal when going back, quite normal!

opps just re-read, you already did that, sorry.
However, I never press the clutch, just come to a standstill, select neutral, then press the button, you might hear the 'clonk' from below & the message centre will indicate the ratio, if it still asks for neutral & you're already in, I suggest a bit of vigorous 'gear-stick wiggling'!!

My guess is that it's the Low box ECU... situated under the passenger seat. They are prone to overheat and the transistors fail. Mine was easy to diagnose.. unplug it and give it a shake... if it rattles it's had it.

If not open it up and it will be apparent if it has overheated... the circuit board will be blackened where the power transistors are fitted.

Par number.. AMR5254... I just got another from ebay for £35
A later model one should solve this problem.

did your dash light still work the range change button that is?

You`ve got a diesel manual? Anyway on mine the sensor seems to think it`s in gear when it`s actually in neutral. At a standstill I select 1st, depress clutch, and push button, and it goes in.
If no luck with that have aquick look at the actuator lever on side of the transfer box. Make sure it`s there and not blocked with solidified mud/gunge.

is it rare to have a manual diesel?does it make it more desirable.

More desirable to me! I know others, (Datatek will be along in a minute), will disagree, but I dislike autos intensely. Partly habit, partly wanting to be in control. Mine changes when I say, not when it wants. That is not halfway around an icy corner.
I won`t comment further as I think it`s more down to personal taste than any cut`n` dried set of facts.
