Hi Guys,

As you may have seen in my other fred I recently took the 110 to have the clunk on power takeup issue looked at only to be told it wasnt the rear axle as they suspected. They now suspect it's the transfer box and have quoted 900 for reconditioned + fit.

Before I get mugged I wanted to see what you guys think. Theres some lateral play in prop at front and a whining noise past 50.

Is it worth taking the 110 back off them for now and trying to diagnose first or just pay out and be done with it?

have you removed plastic caps and checked drive member and shaft spline wear ,you can remove t/box sump and check for play in gears (should be none )jack a front and rear wheel up and feel for play in center diff by contra rotating both props at same time by hand , feeling for play in front / rear diffs

you can get a 2nd hand one for £50 and fitting is easy. A recon one would only be a few hundred I reckon, they are simple pieces of kit and so easy to fit...

I've checked nothing - I simply gave it to the garage and asked them to fix it. But now that they've misdiagnosed it once (which is fine, but I still have to pay) - I'm now thinking it might be safer/smarter to at least attempt to diagnose it first and then bring it back to them.

Not checked the rear A frame ball joint but had a quick look at the UJs. They look OK but I might swap them out at the same time as doing the transfer box.

sounds like A frame ball joint my friend... Check all things could possibly be before spending stupid amounts and getting ripped off!

Still not checked that ball joint (keep forgetting) but an update on the noise...There's NO clunk when I drop off the power and rather than just a noise the whole car visibly jolts when power is applied....
