I think the answer is - "Nope - You need to replace the offside front hub"...

Both ways whilst turning at slow speed from left full lock to right full lock I am 'rewarded' with a very loud 'clunk'.

It seems to be coming from the front driver's side.

Other threads don't say just how loud the noise is which is why I am (may be?) repeating the question.

Before I rush out and buy/fit a replacement hub (for lots of cash) is there any thing else likely to be at fault?

Yeah, check the bushes, panhard rod, suspension etc, but also check the rear A-frame bushes too! They're known to make a loud clunk, but hard to pinpoint ..

Don't forget, a Landrover's a series of metal tubes joined together and they transmit noise very readily!

It turns out the noise can easily be recreated simply by going lock-to-lock whist stationary.

I presume that being stationary precludes the liklihood of anything in the drive train..

I watched it a few times and the noise seems to come from the driver's end of the panhard rod. You can see the whole think move when the clunk occurs (!!)

Is it likely that the bushes at the end of the panhard rod have deteriorated and cause this very loud 'clunk'?

Id fo, whilst I'm in there, are there other things I should attend to?

Unlikely to be hub as they are very sensitive to the slightest movement/play and if there's a clunk, that would indicate huge movement/ collapse of the hub....As well as this, the three amigos would be complaining profusely on the dash. Definately a bush or steering joint or maybe in the steering box itself. Work through all components systematically until you find the culprit.

Yeah - definitely a clunk coming from the end of the panhard rod.

Are the bushes there a leading indicator for something else to fail?

I'd just go round checking all the other bushes, and the track rod ends etc.

She has 130miles on the clock and is showing wear - perhaps this is time to get a polybush set and replace everything in sight!

Yep.....At 130 I'd be looking at replacing bushes with OE rubbers. Polybushes not for me I'm afraid. I'd replace the steering joints while your at it. Chances are if 1 of them is the clunker then they're all not far behind. Cheap enough and will refresh your steering system......

In the end I just replaced the bushes at both ends of the panhard rod

The parts were around a tenner delivered.
The 24mm spanner to fit in the tight space to hold the nut was £3.75

It just needed a litre of plusgas and elephantine leverage to undo the nuts and bolts.

Then it cost me around £15 to get the local engineer to push out and replace the bushes. There was no way I was going to shift them in the vice!

The rest was plain sailing - luckily had the right torque wrench too.

Took me about 2-3 hours in the end - with an hour chasing down someone with a press!
