I took an auto '04 D2 TD5 for a test drive.

Now, I'm not auto expert but...

It was a bit sluggish when pulling away - even booting it didn't give me anything like the power I get in first in my manual one.

Whilst driving she seemed reluctant to kick down and then would not accelerate as aggresively as I'd expect.

Lastly, when driving her hard up a long hill, white smoke started billowing out of the exhaust from two(ish) places:

  • The base of the vertical canister near the exhaust manifold (particulate filter?)
  • The smaller box just under the passenger seat (first baffle?)
The seller has checked it and tried to recreate to no avail.

Is this likely to be a cracked head and/or oil in the turbo

I'm taking her for another test soon - should I bother?

Cheers!

It's a shame she's in really good nick otherwise.
It has to be too good to be true
I didn't want an auto anyway

I can't stop myself asking... Would it likely really be that expensive?

£1200 for a head, known to fail hot and on boost-ask ratty

If it dumps fuel in oil then it is new engine time

Agree with walking away but admit to being slightly intrigued how you tell where smoke is coming from while booting it up a hill

offer them 2500 less and then replace the head

Whilst I was steaming up the hill I did not see the smoke :)

When I stopped at the top to change drivers the plumes of smoke became visible.
So I nipped out and opened the bonnet to see the source(s)

Though for future test drives perhaps I should install cameras :)

Dunno about walk?

Run full tilt away unless you can get a grand an a half knocked off as a minimum ;)

If you can get it for a very good price it might still be worth getting, if you don't mind fannying about.

Once the head is changed for a new strengthened one its something you would no longer have to worry about.

Whereas another one might go soon after you got it.

It would have to be brought at a very good price though

From recent failed purchase experience, the quality of the chassis, interior and bodywork would suggest 1.5k more than they're already asking.

Since its coming from a group of people who should know the value it kinda suggests to me they think there may be a problem and are already discounting to that effect.

So the question, for me, has now become - do I mind having to fanny around

Watch this space I guess

if you think they know theres a problem but aint saying ,do you realy want to buy off them ? I`d keep looking

+1 am suspecting they already got quotes for what needs sorting, if it was cheap enough they would get it sorted to maximise the price, the fact they havent would tell me to keep looking..

if I was looking at a d2 I wanted, and it was cheap because of either engine or chassis problems.
I`d rather have it with the engine problem.
