Hello to all, I wonder if anyone can help, I have a 2001 ES TD5 Auto , title says it all.
Today starts up fine, tick over fine then when you move to pull away or have pulled away it just doesn,t feel as responsive as it did on Sat, even through all the gears it just feels sluggish.

Any ideas ? not a lot to go on I know but that is all there is..

Steve.

Boost sensor is probably plastered in ****e from the ERG. Your manufold will also be caked in it too. Ditch the EGR valve, and clean your sensor up and it should be ok. I took the manufold off mine and steam cleaned it out.

Rob

Thanks for that I did blank off the EGR last week. I,ll try and clean the crap out tomorrow, where abouts is the boost sensor located or what does it look like.
Steve

Rob it does seem if something is caked in crap, so i,ve just taken the air filter out pretty filthy, so took car for a quick run without, still seems the same. Since owning the car for a month now i,ve changed all the oils, blanked off the egr, fitted new anti roll bar bushes and generally given it a mini service. Can,t fault the car really as i,ve driven just over 3000 mile and not had a problem thus far. Seems annoying that this has happened now. The boost sensor am I right in thinking its the black box type thing, (with a clip on either side) on th pipe between the air filter housing and the turbo.

Steve

Rob i,m having similar problems to IanMKD and Craig t. have blanked off the egr, new air filter in, and then problem started you said take off the boost sensor and clean it but I have know idea where or what the boost sensor is ( would like to locate and clean as a precaution). So in he meantime i've taken the plug out of the maf sensor now seems ok. I take it that this is the problem, so a new one will be on its way, how long can you leave the maf unplugged for.

I would try cleaning yeh maf first as they get covered in crap and send false air flow readings to the ECU, as they are not cheap!! I used to clean (small amount of petrol, cotton buds, pipe cleaners etc) mine once a year on my old Audi, the difference was amazing:) Tried it on the wifes Beetle and did'nt make any difference so a new one was called for which did the trick!

Hi Jason,

Thanks for that have cleaned the maf as you said didn,t seem that dirty but cleaned it anyway and also cleaned what I think is the boost sensor small black box on the side of the air filter housing ( held on with two screws) again that wasn,t that dirty.

How long can you leave them unplugged for ?

Results seem slightly better so my guess is that the maf has packed in, have ordered one anyway.

There isn,t much too the maf so what goes wrong with them ?

Steve.

Hi!

When you unplug the maf the ECU runs off default settings to keep the vehicle going!

The maf has a stainless steel intake that measures the amount of air going to the engine which in turn let's the ECU adjust the fuel injection for optimal running, when it's covered in crap or bust it sends false or know reading so ECU dunt think that any airs going in so in turn dunt put any fuel in!

Not got a clue how long you can run with your maf disconected but common sense says that I would get a new one as soon as poss if it's knacked.

Cheers Jason,
I presume its broken, have ordered one will be here tomorrow.
So heres hoping thats all it is thats making the car sluggish.

Thanks all will keep informed as to what the fix is.

Steve

Well it arrived and its fitted, took it out for 15/20 mile drive and feels much better, but it doesn,t feel 100%. Not sure if its me or the car. Have changed oil, oil and air filters, cleaned the boost sensor, replaced the maf, checked for any other air leaks (none) Any ideas ?

The car that is not me.

Check yeh intercooler/turbo hoses for splits/crumpling

Checked all hoses they are all fine tighted up clips and any thing else I could find as a couple were loose, all seems fine...then came back.
Have now checked the plug on the engine harness covered in oil cleaned it all up now seems ok, also there is no oil near the battery compartment is so its not affecting the ECU. So I guess a new harness is in order and an hour of my time. Anyone recommend where to get one from.

Thanks to all who have helped.

Steve

Right new harness is on, got engine up to temp, driving round local streets, bit of dual carriageway, lots of stop start, seeing if I can almost force it to happen again, NOTHING hopefully its cured. Think with a bit of hindsight it was the harness all along, but now its got new maf as well, as well as having a service.
Heres hoping its cured, i'm off out in a minute to try again.

cheers to all.

Steve

Ok another test drive 20 miles of motorway then lots of stop start traffic, nothing all fine, so I thought i,ll go to pub have a pint leave engine running outside, still nothing yeehaa its fixed. So come home have anoher drink to celebrate.

Dodgy harness is the main culpit...

Thanks again to all who helped.
