It seems that my 4x4 drive system on my 300 tdi is not working properly. I started to think it was a bit odd when I noticed that the disco nearly got stuck in places where my old gaylander wouldn't even have the slightest trouble. From that point, I knew something wasn't right but can't figure out what.

Here was me nearly stuck in a gateway to a field.

It's a crap video, you will need to view it in full screen. As you can see, the front wheels are not spinning at all despite overreving the engine. Only the rear wheels were spinning.

I had diff lock engaged at the time. When I disengaged diff lock, the front wheels started to spin but not the rear ones.

Any ideas?

unlike freelander which has viscous coupling given drive to both front and rear ,you have center diff which splits drive equally front and back ,but one spinning wheel is enough to leave car standing ,putting it in diff lock gives drive to both axles but you can still stand still if one wheel at front and one at back spin, viscous coupling as in borgwarner transfer box in rr (but can be fitted to disco)is like driving in diff lock in that both axles are allways driven but with advantage that it allows enough slip for turning

So it's normal for a disco to nearly get stuck in your average wet field at this time of year?

It looks like you have road tyres on which isn't going to help. Wet leaves and grass is one of the worst substances to try and get grip on though.

I rekon that if you stuck it in low range and attempted to drive out with it on tickover it would have come out easy. At worst I rekon it may have needed just a touch of left foot braking.

The dreaded 'green ice'......give me a foot of mud any day

My wife got stuck last year on a soaked and sodden lawn at the gym,it was doing exactly what your car was doing, I was phoned to come and get my wife who was crying her eyes out as she thought 4x4s could go anywhere so she had obviously broken it.I was a bit stumped at the time and towed it the four foot of the lawn onto the car park with my camper van which attracted a fair crowd of on lookers, needless to say at the time I was mortified

I've made another video, it's 100x better.

Diff lock on. Is this definitely normal?

Nope, they're BF Goodrich all terrains.

Really?

Really?

What are the wheels on the other side doing during that?

You should have one front and one rear spinning.

If you have only one wheel ot of the four spinning, you have a problem.

without axle diff lockers you only need one front and one rear to stand still ,momentum is your freind across stuff like that

Or the ability to prevent the wheels that have no traction from spinning and therefore allow the drive to go to the wheels that have the grip.;):)

traction control ,or fiddle brakes ,we used to get more grip and forward motion using brakes judiciously than diff lock when ploughing as a kid

Yep. The ability to lock a spinning wheel into a radius arm can be quite handy on occasions too.;)
