You didn't. Just wanted to make sure that the engine was still running whilst putting fluid in and running through the gears. No need to be touchy.

You said: On a 98 it should have a dipstick. Level/filler plug if it has had dipstick removed or a later box fitted is on front of gearbox sump. Run engine move through gears and place in park.
Remove plug and top up until fluid begins to run out of level plug. Maybe best to remove sump, change filter and refill with new oil. XYZ switch may also need some attention.

Run through the gears and Place in Park - Remove plug and top up! This is not correct. You remove the plug and top up then run the engine and run throught the gears (a couple of seconds at each gear change) foot on the brake, at the same time (someone underneath) is putting in more fluid until the level stabilises. Then replace the plug and do a test run.

I really don't give a **** what Ashcrofts say to be honest, i have been topping and filling automatic boxes longer than they have existed. What i said was correct. If you don't run engine run through gears and place in park BEFORE you remove filler plug you will have fluid all over the bloody place. You don't know what you are talking about.

Maybe he learned that the hard way:)

There is no reason for you being so rude. And yes I do know what I am talking about. End of conversation.

Sorry but you don't, you are giving out misinformation. Topping up or checking oil for level, MUST be done cold. If you open the filler plug BEFORE you have the engine running and have moved through the gears to fill the torque converter, you will have fluid everywhere. Try your method, but have plenty of rags handy to clean up the mess. Filling a box that has been drained is a slightly different procedure, initial fill to overflow is done with engine off, only then do you start engine, move through gears and again fill to overflow with engine running.

I am not giving out missinformation just quoting Ashcrofts recomendation, no mention of hot or cold! I have never had masses of fluid everywhere as in most cases the car has had a new box. If checking a box then just by putting on the lift has the desired effect and no massive overflow and occassionaly needing a top up!! Never had any problem with the Ashcroft method (as you now seem to agree in your last three lines of your text). Insulting me is not helpful. I will accept an appology.

Many people on here don't have a lift and will be doing it on their backs. Topping up or checking level MUST be done with fluid COLD and engine running. Simple as that. Please don't try to teach your granny to suck eggs. The last three lines of text referred to filling an empty box, NOT the subject previously being discussed which was topping up or checking oil level. You started this trying to be a smart arse not me.

You continue to insult me which is wrong.

So once you have run through the gears and placed in park just undo the plug and top up.

I just pointed out that Ashcrofts recomment that you also run through the gears whilst topping up - Whats wrong with that!!! better still leave it alone you have made your point. No more posts on this please..

I am not going to read back through the thread but you said as far as i recall. Remove plug then start engine and run through gears. If the engine has NOT been run to fill the torque converter and you remove the plug oil will gush out.
Personally i think removing the dipstick was an error on Land rovers part. With a dipstick, life is much easier. Possibly done to force people into dealers and save a couple of quid. Some auto boxes have two extra marks on dip stick for checking level with hot oil. Lower ones marked high/low/cold and the upper ones high/low at 40 degrees C. Peace is declared. :);)
