I was checking diff oil and greasing UJ's when I had a look at rear shocks. Their is a lot of play at the bottom end on both. Tried to tighten nut but the whole shock just turns ha do I tighten this up and is it possible something has come off the shock making it such a loose fit?
 
bushes are worn and nusts rusted tight, it often wears shocker mount hole oval if run like that for long have you no grips or similar to hold base of shocker, battery or air gun are very useful for such situations
 
use an exhaust clamp around the shock to hold it in place whilst the nut is undone. that has always done it for me. even better with a bar attached to the clamp.

I have looked up and can now see how to loosen nut whilst holding base of shock with grip. Can I simply replace the bush and retighten or would I need a new shock. Thanks for your advice

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, but if they are loose and rattling about in the bracket on the axle, then as well as what James Martin has said about the hole getting elongated, you might also wish to check the shock themselves to make sure they have not been worn and had the diameter reduced on the rod section that fits in the axle bracket hole.

Neilly feel free to teach me, thanks for the advice I will look at changing the bushes and check the shocks. If the bush fixes it for the moment I will look into replacing the shocks later as I am off the lakes on Friday no won't have time to make a complete change. Cheers
 
As well as the bushes, which are easy enought to get , do not forget the washers which will be required.
