Hello,

Thankyou in advance for any help on this, there is a 2001 Discovery 2 close to me that looks in good nick from the pictures and had discussions with the current owner and will be going to see it on wednesday. Basically the only thing that concerns me a little is the mileage it has 180k miles on the clock are petrol engines good for this kind of mileage and what should i be looking for on one of this mileage? A few things he said came up on the last mot as an advisory, Power Steering seepage from steering box and some deriation in rear anti roll bar bushes. Other than that was just tyres etc which he has had done.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

the v8 engines are know for head gasket failure,due to dropped liners,check the oil and water for mixing,get it really warmed up and see if the top hose is rock solid,if yes it could be hgf.
 
Hello thankyou for the advice, if it all checks out fine i guess this is something to keep an eye on with it. What kind of mileage could i expect from one of these v8 engines if looked after serviced correctly etc. This is my first discovery and probably looking at having it for a few years until we can afford a newer discovery. it is an auto so are the gearboxes etc a weak point on something with this kind of mileage.

Any more advice would be greatly apprechiated.

If your going to do around 10K miles a year, based on typ ave MPG 17MPG, your fuel costs at todays low prices of £1.09 fuel cost will be £3k per year, plus £505.00 car tax.
Dont buy a V8 if your worried about economy!

PS or go LPG, as long as you dont want to use the Eurotunnel

To be honest i would be lucky to do 5k miles in a year in it as i work less than 2 miles from home and we have another car for longer trips etc. my only concern was the disco i am looking at has 180k miles on the clock so just wanted to see if people have them with this kind of mileage on.

Keeping a "eye" on it will mean don't let your alloy engine overheat, that's the only reason cylinder issues arise.
Although I did have to a camshaft replaced at 100k miles and that after having a LR service twice every year on my 3.5.
Never had any issues with the two auto gearboxes, your worries should be with the D2 electrics that now seen to be falling over and affecting everything now, (going by the Forums I read) not so much with the mechanics which is just wear and tear.

Just make sure it comes with 'history' to get an idea what new and what's original and of course everything works, still 180k miles is a high mileage, what is it 14 years old so over 12.5k miles per year average.
I will never reach that high mileage so can't say what mileage u can expect to reach before V8 is worn out, didn't know there was a limit, all depends on the owner/s..

Perfect thankyou for your help. I will be coming from an Alfa so used to a few niggle issues with electronics :-D. I will go through the history with a fine tooth comb.
 
Ahh Ex Alfa. So yes you will be very familiar with all the issues a Landy has, dodgy build, joke electrics, rust, weird faults etc etc etc!
I dont know what it is about them, even with all their issues, once they get their hooks in to you, your addicted! Alfas and Landies!
Yes give the history a good going over and do the MOT history check (which has become my Ebay hobby now!)

Nail it from a standstill and see how much slower you are than the official 0-60, might give you an idea of how worn it is.
I wouldn't consider one with 180k unless it was for around £1000 mark
 
looking around 1800 quid it is a nicer spec than alot of others inside than i have seen locally to be leather seats etc, and overall looks like a clean example.
 
Coolant - use only OAT, fuel - run on multipoint LPG.

Ours has just clocked up 170002 tonight, short engine fitted at 89735miles.

Most cooling problems are down to not using the correct coolant in the first place.

We run in Europe with our show trailer, Holland down to France and back, no problems.

I think if i do buy it i am going to give it a good service change all fluids etc.
Fuel wise this one isnt LPG so guessing premium unleaded tesco momentum or something like that would be best.
 
95ron is fine. Compressive history helpful otherwise yes, change all fluids. Peter's motor above would be of interest, less than 100k on engine, well looked after. They love clean oil, changing every 6k by the book is the absolute max. If it is 180k on the original engine, even with the best care, it will be approaching time for a fresh cam/ top end rebuild
 
Shine a light in the oil filler / rocker cover. Light brown = healthy scaling to black = borrowed time.
 
Ok perfect i will check this out, the information on the last MOT below:

Power steering fluid level low, but not below minimum (2.3.1)
Power steering component(s) has slight seepage from a component slightly from steering box (2.3.3b)
nearside rear Anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
offside rear Anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
nearside front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)

He has changed the tyre i know that, the Power Steering steering box seepage is this a nightmare to change?
And the Anti roll bars are wear and tear like on my alfa.
