Hi

I have just purchased a 2004 LR Discovery TD5 with 36 000 miles on the clock. It has a Full service history and is in great shape all round. I am about to take it on holiday to France (No Adventure stuff just roads) and being new to Land Rover and Diesel I was wondering if there was any advice that users could give me before I go. What should I check on the vehicle and what should I watch out for while on the road.

Thanks

I appreciate the car has fsh but if it were me I would be going through it and replacing all oils and filters to ensure that I had a trouble-free trip. Also check all brake discs and pads - replacing if necessary.

Apart from that do the normal things before a trip: check tyre wear & pressures; oil and coolant levels etc.

With only 36,000mls on the clock there should be nothing worn out.

Just make sure basic checks are carried out daily, don't push it too hard on the Autoroute and make sure you have good comprehensive breakdown cover!

Drove my defender from Italy to the uk and back this summer. Got the mechanic to check everything and replace anything dodgy before I left and took a selection of oils and extra coolant with me just in case. Didn't have any problems at all except for an oil leak on the way home but it was just me panicking and due to the steadily rising outdoor temperature as I made my way south. Have a good trip :D

Just another thought crossed my mind - this is only a trip from England to France, we're not talking the Paris-Dakar or anything.

You have paid good money for a low mileage Disco - relax, enjoy the jaunt and don't worry.

France is not Africa or Asia you know, you'll still be in the civilised world;);)

but yeah its not the arse end of the world, relax and enjoy, i once bought a disco on a saturday and drove it to poland on the sunday, and that was best part of 15 years old at the time, yours will be fine enjoy.

I had my local independent LR garage check over my D2 before a 1200 mile round trip earlier this year, cost me £45 including new rear wiper and a couple of bulbs... well worth the money.

It was me, my wife and 2 boys (one of which was 4 months old) and the car did really well... i even got about 30 mpg out of it sticking at 3000 rpm on the autoroute.

I made sure i had european cover before we left and only had one hiccup which turned out to be the intercooler hose slipping off on the way home so loads of smoke and no top end torque. took 5 mins to re fit and we were on our way.

Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure and just cruise along... its a great distance car.
