Had a horrible occurrence after the 2nd taxi run of New Years Eve (kids they have all the fun), just pulled of the slip road building up speed and crunch what the hell its sounded like I’d run over a cone that someone had left on the edge of the slip road, I pulled in got out with a torch and checked nothing I looked around nothing so I hadn't hit anything. I carefully backed up a couple of feet nothing, so I slow moved forward nothing, I moved off and slowly built up speed but as soon as I backed off the accelerator the crunching /flapping sound came back but when I accelerated it stop, so next time I needed to slow down I pushed the clutch in 1st the noise didn't sound as bad and limped home. So I have a noise which started under acceleration but does not occur if driven slowly but does when slowing, but does not appear to link to the brakes only the drive train. Any ideas.

at this stage without actually know where its coming from i can not help, but is there any chance of getting under the car to look to see if anything is coming loose, only thing i can think of giveing a flapping sound is either the vcu or a drive belt.

Try it with the A/C selected off, i.e. window de-mister also off.

Could it be omething like this do you think?

Engine-related loud buzzing noise solved!

Check your engine bay RH side inner wing plastic cover!

I've been baffled by an expensive sounding buzzing noise. Sounded like a dry steering pump or AC pump. It happened after starting up following a 5 week lay-up. It went away a little bit after some running, but came back when on the over-run, especially in the lower gears. From this I suspected it had something to do with the position of the engine on it's mounts. But it didn't always do it. Also, just before I'd parked up prior to the lay-up I'd pressure washed and given a drying run with no noise.

Today it was time to investigate properly. I noticed I could get the noise to show with the AC on....(a little confused at first as I had the fan switched on and the demister selected, but the AC switch 'off'. As most of you know, this selects the AC anyway). By engaging the clutch a little in reverse gear I moved the engine on the mounts anough to get the noise to show. Do it again with the AC off and there was no noise.

Looking under the RH front wheel arch I could see that the inner wing plastic engine bay cover was pushed in at the bottom (probably with the power washer jet). With the engine switched off, a good pull on the bottom of the cover located the plastic ears on the outside of the sump shield to keep it in position.

Result...ultra expensive engine noise is now gone!

Check the VCU damper.

VCU damper came loose on mine yesterday bloody scared me I thought the prop was falling off .
The rubber bushes inside the outer ring became unbonded from the inner drum and the whole thing was spinning round the shaft it can't fall off but its not good.
Three tubes of SUPERGLUE stuck the little bugger back together.
SO FAR SO GOOD

thanks all, got under and took a look, found diff to be moving very easily. front diff mounting bolt had come out but luckily was still in the damper bracket and the RH bolt was half out so the diff must have been bouncing around like a good'n, did a test drive seems OK, hopefully problem solved.
