I have a Land rover series 3 lightweight, runs very well, however today it didn't want to turn off. It took me at least 30 minutes of endless switch-fiddling and combinations for it to turn off, I think lights off, battery removed and key removed stopped it in the end! Not too sure!

You can take the key out and engine will still run.

Any ideas? I'm lost.

most likely ignition barrel,
quick way to turn off is by unplugging a low tension connection on the coil.

Evening,

After a week of fiddling, replaced ignition switch and new solenoid, it still has a problem. I'm thinking it must be shorting somewhere-when I re-connect the battery the dash lights come on and all electrics work-despite the keys not being in the ignition. The wiring is not in the best of condition so considering re-wiring the lot. MOT is over at the end of the month!
