pretty sure its illegal as they are too high up. dont think your allowed any above a certain high which i think is set near your headlights. lightbars should be for offroad use only.

Hiya....
Its legal to have light bars on your disco providing they are activated by a separate (luminated) switch. Mine passed MOT & tester asked how they were switched on, once he was satisfied they where not on the same switched circuit as the head lamps he rubber stamped my MOT.
 
I seem to remember a soft road car that had 2 spotlamps bolted to the roof and they were legal as they went out as soon as you started the engine?

Help me with this someone, was it called something like matra? God I'm getting old..............I remember back in the wars when I were a lad.......oh hum........GOT IT...not the roof the panel at the bottom of the windscreen, still to high for normal road use. http://www.carjoy.nl/Matrapics/Mrancho.jpg

Sadly yes they are illegal for road use but as I would spend all night booking wagon drivers for it, it tends to be ignored most of the time, but they can and have caused accidents where they are dazzling people in the distance over hedges etc.
It's best not to use them as you can't really justify their use on the road anyway unless you are into nocturnal squirrel spotting and even then that's no excuse.
The illegality as others have said is from the height they are fitted above the headlights.
 
straight from the horses mouth, thanks for the reply. was going to say about the wagons but as you say you would never stop. what would be the penalty if someone was caught using them?
 
Would offer fixed penalty ticket or take your chances in court.....

Obviously increasing severity if you caused an accident using them.
 
I have twin beam spotlights mounted on roofrack, if I were to put low wattage bulbs in the dip beam so acting as high level side lights, would this be legal? Just a thought as vans etc have high level running lights. Obviously as previously stated the high beam would have to have a seperate switch.
 
I used to use em on top'o me van wen a wus courierin they were conected to the main beam an came into there own wen up in the tops of scotty land and welshy valleys, as they wus on the main beam switch it meant I only used em wen needed an other road users were unafected by em cos they went out wens I dipped me eddlights

some spots have a sidelight built into them (horse shoe shaped ones, or angel eyes popular with scally light "upgrades") and theres nothing wrong with them, policeman mate of mine has a BIG merican chevvy pickup and has them on his

mine are a seperate switch, but then also controlled by the main beam pull. so can still full flash ppl we know, but never do it in dark only during day, unless we're off road there pointed down anyway
 
High level sidelights or marker lights are not a problem as they emphasize the size of vehicle you are travelling towards.

Also it doesn't matter if your high level lights go out on dip beam if you are still using them on the road with main beam they are illegal.

Even if you think the road is clear, the distance the beam travels can blind people at different road levels that you may not have seen on side roads or parallel roads to the one you are on.
