big thing, bolted to the gearbox, transfers drive to the rear wheels, rear prop is attached to it, expensive bugger is if fuffs up

Cock off stop giving him more to think about.
what mileage is your hippo on?
The vcu is rmmended to be be changed every 70k ..easieat test is to o reverse full lock left and right without using go pedal......if it feels like its slowing down, stalling or grinding to a halt then vcu could be fecked............this would result in diff or. Ird failiute and a 1 k+ bill
Mines now on 84k and I check it every week in the local supermarket car park although it has spent 10 to 15 k of that off until I found and cured a diff fault.

Its done under 42.5k. Registered 06.

If that was leaking oil would it appear to be brand new clean oil?

I fear the worst then.

My poor wallet.

So I could be looking at a bill of around £1000 if that is the problem?

I wouldn't think so.
It wasn't leaking before you had the clutch done .....so it's something the garage has done or not done correctly.
Ird failure would normally go with a bang and you'd get lots of noise from it when driving it.

I am hard of hearing, but I have heard no bang and the car drives fine with no noise.
Seemed very normal when I drove it the 650 metres or so to the garage this morning.

I couldn't tell personally...but from what I've read you'd know about it as your hippo feels like it doesn't want to move then you get a big bang or crunch followed by lots of knocking and rumbling..............why you had this?

No, not had that.

I can miss some sounds that indicate something is wrong, but I certainly would not miss what you describe.

Reminds me of when a piston exploded through the side of the engine whilst doing about 60 mph in a Sierra.

The engine centre had never seen so much damage caused by a piston going so they asked if they could have the engine to use as an exhibit to warn what could happen if you don't look after your engine.

I did look after it, not that it did me any good. :)

Just got it back.

passed its mot without any problems.

As for the mysterious oil leak........

No sign of any leak from around the bell housing so they are confident the gearbox seals and clutch are all fine.

They did see evidence of oil coming from the transfer box where it bolts onto the gearbox.
They think it is possible they damaged the seal there when originally doing the clutch replacement.

It will go back in on Tuesday to investigate that.

I am assuming that the car is unusable now until this is sorted?
I have a 20 mile each way journey to work so I am concerned I may cause damage it the transfer box is dry.

Looks like the train and some walking for me then! :(

Hope you get it sorted pal :)

They keep saying that if they caused it, then its covered under the guarantee, but I am worried I am going to get another large unexpected bill. :(
I wasn't expecting the original one. This car has been running really well since I purchased it 22 months ago.

Theres always something to worry about , mine at present is the master cylinder and the crankshaft pulley

Well, at long last it seems my problem of leaking fluid is fixed.

It was a large o ring between the transfer box and the gear box that was causing the problem.

It was renewed on Tuesday and so far, I have not seen any evidence of a leak.
