I'm reluctant to drive it anywhere in case it get seriously damaged. Had wondered about the head gasket but would that case the engine to run away? What would cause the pressure to increase to the point that a lot of oil to end up in the airbox?
 
Dont drive it or it will get damaged if u have to take it some where get a flatbed or trailer
 
I doubt it is your HG, I only listed that as an example of what leak down test could pin point in a hypothetical scenario.

I wonder whether a broken ring or a cracked piston would allow this sort of pressure to build up.

Don't get me wrong, it could very well be your turbo even without any of the tell tale play...

what's the point? The engine was self fuelling on it's own oil..

You can get them cheaper, afaik (and i don't know much about turbos) if the wheels aren't damaged then you can get away without a rebalance, as they don't spin up very high anyway. Or you can pick up a second hand turbo. I'd do the latter, if it is the turbo.

Or i'll buy your engine and you can buy a new one if you want :D

Have a look at removing the turbo for now, so you can still drive it. the 200/300 'di' mod is done alot with series iirc.
 
You need to have someone with a knowledge of turbos to have a look at the impeller blades, if the bearings have gone and caused damage to the blades then you could have metal fragments in your intake manifold which will get sucked into the engine and damage the cylinder bores etc. Also make sure all airpipes and intercooler have been cleaned of oil before restarting.

There is a possibility the turbo is fine, and a CR test would indicate a problem in the block causing a lot of blow by pressure and very heavy breathing...

agree had this happen on a non turbo perkins prima revved its nuts off engine was worn and chucking oil back into the air filter

i stand corrected :eek:

I would have thought that it would have taken a pretty damn worn engine to blow enough oil out to make it self run. Also the tdi has a breather on it.

if it was that clappered, wouldn't it have shown other symptoms.. like being sluggish up hills due to low compression?
 
Perhaps, but if the piston developed a crack, or a compression ring fell to pieces it could happen in a moment.
Breather system or not, they soon chuck enough oil through to overcome it.

the only other time i had a car do it to me was when the sump got filled with diesel by an injector leaking..... although im sure its not the case here as you said there was little oil in there
 
Took the turbo off - it's being reconditioned at midlandturbos. Fingers crossed it is nothing else.
 
Agree with the previous posts, naturally aspirated engines can, and do runaway, it has happened to me on a Ford tractor!

Nothing to hide just wanted a chat with Shifty. Midland turbos are charging me £185 plus vat to recondition incl new seals and bearings (free collection and delivery). I'll have it back on Friday. Seamingly the piston wasn't able to work.
 
The turbo arrived back today - it looks brand new. I'll take some pics whilst fitting it tomorrow.
