hi there all can anyone help me out here can you tell me what is the difference between a landrover 90 and a landrover defender 90 thinking of selling my range rover and getting one of these

when landrover first put the landrover 90 into production in 1983-84 it was named the landrover 90. in 1990-91 they introduced the 200tdi defender engine and from then it was named "defender" also the other reason was because the discovery had a name aswell as the rangerover did, so they named the 90 the "defender". i might not be 100% on that but im sure im not to far away

a 90 or ninety as it should be known is a landrover swb that was produced before the 200tdi engine came into the range, so should have one of the following engines

2.25 petrol
2.25 diesel
2.5 petrol
2.5 diesel
2.5 turbo diesel (TD)

a defender 90 is a post 89 and were fitted originally with 200tdi engines although other engines have replaced them over the years like the 300tdi, the td5, the 'PUMA' engine(transit tdci), the 3.5 V8, and some 5.0 V8s

•1983-84 90" and 110" vehicles launched.
The venerable Series III is replaced by the 90" (1984) and 110" (1983) Land Rovers. These introduce modern styling, and coil springs. A 130in extra-long wheelbase version is also produced.
•1988 British Aerospace take over the Rover Group.

•1990 Discovery launched.
The Discovery was aimed at the new family 4x4 market, but still had enviable off-road abilities.
•1990 90" and 110" vehicles rebranded as 'Defender'.
In parallel to the launch of the Discovery, the 90" and 110" Land Rovers are rebranded under the 'Defender' name to reflect their use in defence forces. Rebranding is accompanied with a new 200TDi diesel engine option, with the 300TDi option following in 1993.

no real difference in body panels, only engine and gearbox. and suspension i.e anti-roll bar etc. you can get a 1980s landrover 90 with a 200tdi disco conversion for a lot less than say a 93 defender

thanks for that usefull information what is invloved in doing the disco conversion do i need the engine and box from a discovery or do i just need the engine???

just the engine and intercooler and radiator, go on the landrover 90 section on here and top of list is a full guide how to do a swap

thanks for all your help that seems easy enough to me once again thanks. do you know any for sale in the derbyshire area and what roughly do you think i should be paying for a 90 whats up with the early turbo diesel original

the TD is a little gutless prices range from a few hundred pounds for a project to thousands for one thats been built onto a galvanised chassis and been 'restored'
