Hi there

I have a Disco 2 4.0L V8 2000 model. It started making a clunking noise when freewheeling or under engine breaking. In low range it seems to make the noise constantly. I suspected it was potentially a drive shaft issue so I removed the front shaft and locked the center diff, the noise remained but seemed to be a bit quieter. I did the same for the rear drive shaft and the noise remains. I disengaged the diff lock and put the gearbox in neutral. I then rotated the hand break drum and every few rotations there was a slight noise in the transfer box.
Any ideas on the issue and potential solutions?

Thanks

i had a clunking noise, drained the oil from the transfer box and the drain plug magnet looked like a hedgehog. took the inspection plate off and most of the cog teeth had gone. had to get a replacement.
