Hi there to you all,
I have recently bought my first ever Land Rover and went for a Discovery 2 on the 04 plate. It has done reasonably low mileage (85000), but it appears has had a hard life - it's been on farms in Wales for a large part of its life and it shows. I live in Essex and hopefully with the lack of hills it can have a bit of an easier life for a while, until it is fully repaired to a condition I am happy with.
I've started to service it, and am working through the list of jobs that need to be done to get it back to the condition it should be in.
I have found this forum and www.discovery2.co.uk which are both very helpful, and am amazed at how helpful, knowledgable and willing to help people are.
However, I am looking for some advice if anyone can help out. I have an oil leak from the rear of the engine and it is dripping down on the drive way. I have had a brief look at where it is coming from and it looks like it is the rear main oil seal area.
I have searched, but cannot see anywhere if there is a video or photo guide or similar or how to remove the manual gearbox from the disco in order to get to the area it looks like it's coming from.
Is there anyone out there, who can assist with how to remove the gearbox. I am confident I can do the work as I was a mechanic for 10 years, but a guide or description would be very useful.

Hope someone can assist

Many thanks

Jon

WELCOME!

Is it a V8 or TD5? If it's a TD5 then is the oil leak actually oil, or is it diesel? Reason I ask is because part of the fuel system is at the back of the engine, namely the fuel pressure regulator.

Sorry, yes it is a TD5 and it's definitely an oil leak. It's coming from below the top half of the gearbox. I do have a diesel leak, but not from there, but that's another thing on the list of things to do.

Hi Jon, if you look at the front of the engine just behind the belts you'll see a plastic plug/seal about 2.5" diameter, oil frequently leaks out of this seal as it hardens over time. There is an identical seal to the rear of the engine, this leaks the same as the front one but is a pain to get at hence it gets less attention. An oil leak from here will drip down onto the gearbox. Welcome to the forum :)

On to, or in to? I've got nothing on top of the gearbox, and nothing that I can see at the top of the engine, front or rear. I'll take another look, thank you.

Re oil leak from rear of engine, do you know if the injector wiring has been replaced ?when I did mine I was told by a friend who works at L/R to be very careful how I positioned the cam cover gasket , if the rear of the gasket is not seated correctly oil will leak on to the padding on the bulkhead I was told it took about two weeks to work its way to the bottom ,oil then dripped on to the gear box then the floor, dealers had a few back due to poor fitting. Might be worth a look.

I have looked at the seal to the rear of the camshaft, and it is leaking and you're right I didn't even see it there. I'm not sure that it is leaking enough to leave the mess that it has left on the driveway, but with the amount of mud that there is stuck to the body and for the amount of time it has been leaking, it is hard to say exactly where is is coming from. Thanks for the advice, I have ordered both seals (front and rear) as they are only a few ££££ and look one hell of a lot easier to replace that the rear main. Hopefully it will be this oil leak fixed.
Thanks again.
