just remember you may look cool with yer 4x4. but your mates will have little hatchbacks and will dick you off the lights or round town, so def go for a 2.5td or v8 but yeh lol you have no chance on insurance unless you muma pays for it (dont mean to sound harsh)

but remember if you going to a house party full of eleventeen yer olds and theres a fit bird there, your mate will get there first in his hatchback and get in there first.

but you will have great fun finding out what the vehicle can do!

You can fit a bed in the back of a landy though....... ;)

With the right insurance company a Landy will be much cheap to insure than a hatchback.

I think Boydy paid about £700 when he was 17 for a 110?
 
Just my experience...

I've driven land rovers since I was 13. On the road since I was 17. Never had major problems I've not been able to fix myself (then again, only driven a year and a half).

I've got a defender 110. I can throw all my mates and party gear in it and go off wherever it takes me. Insurance was intially over £6,000 (though that was a non-specialist insurer). Now its £1,700. However, I have heard that insurance on 90s is alot cheaper.

Mines a td5 which is reasonably new (2000) and has a big engine, so insurance also will be up for that. But on the plus side I do get around 30mpg, a full tank costs around £80 from empty. So can get over 300 miles for that money.

I'd reccommend a landy to anyone looking at a first car. It teaches you that you can't race around, it simply isn't safe to do so. You're interested in it and it helps teach you about mechanical means and vehicles in general. And it can do anything. You clean it up and polish it, and you can drive it to your wedding (ask around, people do this) or a school prom. Then you can shove your mates in and go to a festival and sleep in it, and carry your mates with all the gear. Then you can go and play in a muddy field.

At the end of the day, its a perfect vehicle for anyone. I reccommend one to my friends. And so far, 3 have bought them!
 
Oh and since we're talking about pulling power (with the lasses).

You wouldn't think it, but they're ace! Girls love to get dirty.

But keep it nice and clean if you're going out. Girls don't like to hear "Wipe your feet and your arse when you get out love."
 
Without wanting to put a downer the lasses situation - just make sure it does not break down on the side of the M6 at 3 in the morning when is ****ing it down with rain :violent:
 
I have just bought a defender 90 300tdi 1997 for my first car. I think its great to be honest and cant wait to do loads of off roading. Im 16 at the moment, but i have bought the landy early so i can offroad prep it and get it looking a bit tidier than the ex farm vehicle it was. Dont get me wrong it wasnt bad condition. Im just looking forward to passing my test and taking her on pay and play days in wales to be honest.
I know that insurance is going to be a bit pricey to start with, but it should get cheaper as time goes on (if im sensible). The cost is worth it for a landy!:):D
 
I think a land rover series 3/90/110/defender would be a great first car. It'll give you a real appreciation for vehicles, and lots of work you _may_ have to do to a vehicle just isn't that daunting with a landy (if you've got someone who knows about them to help you!). Not only that, but driving without power steering makes you a better driver. If you get in to a smaller nippier car after driving a beast like a landy, it'll feel like a lamborghini, and you'll be able to handle it with ease. The reverse isn't so true! You'll be a better driver for it. Having room for loads of people + kit, and laughing whilst people try and get their saxos out of a field at a festival (and charging them a fiver for a towie :) ) will make it all worthwhile too.
 
btw, it's a complete bastard to check your blind spot in a hard top (both sides, but particularly passenger side). The rear seating is a lot nicer in a county station wagon, and the insurance is about half as much because a hard top classes as a van! At 17, insurance is going to be a _BIG_ factor.
 
I would say series3 / 90 is your best options. You may want to buy something below your budget so you get a chance to do some work yourself and ge it the way you want.

Insurance wise, definately speak to NFU Mutual, they seem to be the best with young drivers, and understand that a landy is slow and dont just look at engine size. I was paying under 1000 when I was 17 on an early td5 90 HT.

And all my mates, now want one :D
