Any one stripped a 90 steering box (4 bolt) to renew seals, I burned the seal getting it hot enough to get drop arm off.

Wasn't that bad was it:eek:

Going to have a go after doing interior lights and steering wheel and sorting indicators out:)

Hi to be honest i changed the seals in mine and have access to all the tools required and it tooh 4 hrs and still had slight leak in the end put in a sealing oil from an american oil company and its not leaked since.
but if you have burnt it that might not work

They're a bugger to make them tight after replacing the seals!

I'll see if I can find the manual which also has a couple of hand-written tips for seating the seals. If I can, I'll scan it and post the pages.

That would be very useful thank you.

Going to have a go at it next week, cant be that difficult, I think I only overheated the bottom seal with the gas torch, got the bits anyway and its a spare box so no harm done if I fook it up:)

reconditioned quite a few

Would love to but bearings etc in and then it's done for life (mine anyway) trying to keep it all original under the body line so it can be put back to a nice solid unmessed with Landy when I sell it:)

with the 4 bolt box there are 2 types bushed and roller bearing ,you can tell by postion of locking grub screw for rack adjuster ,slotted screw on engine side of box , bearings been roller dont really wear but can collapse (needles drop out and damage shaft )in which case youd realy need another box ,but you can buy them from bearing suppliers ,one of the main issues is corrosion and pitting were seal sits ,sleeves can be bought to cure this but offhand i dont know were now ,the other issues can be just wear in sector shaft and input usually noticeable by the fact the top adjuster is wound in too far and box still has play ,box needs replacing really as parts are too costly and lastly input shaft ,its 2 shafts in one and the torsion between the 2 gives you the pas steering if thats poor again a new box ,but a reseal and set up can transform a reasonable used box , you dont need any special tools just a uj to fit on input to feel preload etc as its rebuilt
