Hi,

I've just replaced the oil seals in the rear offside hub on my 90 because diff oil had leaked out and contaminated the shoes etc. I've cleaned the drum, backplate etc. and replaced the brake shoes but they are binding. As a rotate the drum, I get to a point where I can't rotate it anymore, it's as if the drum is oval, can this happen? If so, is it common on Land Rovers?

Looking at the shoes, they are catching at the top third of each shoe.

I fitted new shoes on the near side and they seem fine.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Had something like this on mine.
Was there any vibration through the footbrake before hand?
I sorted mine by sanding the edges off the new shoes and ruffing up the surface of the shoe. failed the mot then after I did this it flew through

As said, yes its common, driving it will take the edge off the shoes or get some new drums, about £30 a pair last time i changed mine on the 90 was a few years ago though (5 years or so)

Cheers Steve

Thanks for your replies. I've tried to lightly sand the edges of the brake linings but still no joy, I'll fit a new set of drums and see what happens.

Most people replace the rear axle on defender 90 with disco 1 axle for disc brakes etc rather drum brake. Better all four wheel brakes stronger and no mud clogging inside too need to put a damper on pipeline by the reservoir towards the rear to stop the rear brakes lock up etc when applying the brakes maybe woth thinking about

Did you buy the shoes from paddock? I bought some from there and they wouldnt fit without grinding loads off.
Got some brand new ones from craddock you can have for nothing if you pay the post(and if I can find them

Sussed it! The left-hand plunger on the wheel cylinder was seized. Fitting a new wheel cylinder fixed the problem, or a least gave an extra few mil clearance allowing the drum to rotate properly.

Thanks all for your help.

PS I'll keep a lookout for a Disco 1 rear axle. That certainly sounds the way to go.
