I keep reading about transmission failures, has anyone on here been so unlucky? Oh and can someone confirm if it is chain driven. Would it also be advisable to do a transmission flush?
Trannies give out around 80k miles or so apparently, if yours has been looked after, it may have been looked at already....

Also can't change the oil, the box is sealed for life apparently.

Course you can change the oil !!
And it's highly recommended that you do !
I changed the oil and filter on my td6 gearbox, the gear changes are smoother now

I plan to change the oil every year to help postpone the gearbox failures.

Landrover withdrew the "Sealed for life" statement soon after the realised that oil doesn't last forever !
Useless !! Lol

In what way is it sealed? Does that mean there is no drain hole? I assume you just take one of the feed pipes off near the bottom, and drain as much as you can.
Also what is the best source of parts for the l322?

Nope just a statement and a sticker on the box.

There are proper drain holes and fill holes like any other gearbox.

Just do a couple of changes so that you flush through the system as you can't drain all of the oil at once just by undoing the drain plug

Do all RR's of this age (diesel) have the GM gearbox? I wonder if the warranty could be a good investment?!
I think my mind is made up, I want a RR!

As far as i know all diesel range rovers up to 2005/2006 have the GM boxes
They changed them when they put the tdv6 into the l322 which replaced the BMW td6 engine.

The petrols have the other gearboxes that aren't so bad but they both have there own positives and negatives.

Im a diesel only lover so I would recommend the td6
But up to your budget and fuel costs I guess

Mine had a new tranny at about 85k
Was 8months old when I bought the car, got a receipt from land rover fer 4grand!

I think I might just get the warranty for peace of mind! Final inspection tomorrow, and then I think I will buy!

Picked it up yesterday evening. I love it to bits, and it drives faultlessly.
After speaking to a few people it appears that the price is not bad at all.
Oh, and mpg on my mixed 15 mile drive to work was 27 mpg- I think that's great!

Congrats on your new purchase....

I love mine to bits too....even though it has had a couple of niggles in the last week....ABS Sensor wiring and what appears to be water/dirt ingress into one of the rear height sensors.....

Enjoy it, I am, and also the grin you get when driving it is worth all the tea in China....
