After several years of not running a Land Rover, we have recently been looking to buy a Disco. We have found a really clean example on an 'L' plate on a forecourt in Wolverhampton. This is a 2 litre MPI and my question is can anybody give me a rough idea of mpg for this particular engine. Also any other comments, preferably constructive, would be appreciated before we part with our hard eaned. We had been looking for a 300tdi really, but this one is so clean for its age we could just be tempted so long as it's not going to bankrupt us running it.
Thanks in anticipation,
Andy Light.

james is about right, not far behind the v8 3.9.
things to look for, rust, altho the outa body might look good it can hide a lot underneath. check the sills especially under the plastic trim under the doors, lift carpets as much as possible. the rear floor pan (boot) is prone to rust. but do get right underneath and have a good look round. bottom of doors themselfs. when taking for a drive listen for knocks when takeing up drive, they do knock a bit, but only a bit. steering, should feel smooth. no noise's from the pump. check swivel pin housing for leaks. (you know, the shiney balls behind the front wheels)

give the chassis a tap should have a bit of a ring to it, a dull thud may tell you that its rusted inside.
also check up behind the back bumper for rust.

cant say much about the enigines, apart from being a bit under power'ed. if youve got the extra cash, do think about a tdi.

i wouldn't touch an mpi with a barge pole, they were the real poverty model and about as powerful as a fart in a colander, go for an older tdi if its economy you are after, mpi's are 10 a penny for obvious reasons,
sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone. Am now the proud co-owner (it's in the wife's name) of a 300Tdi Disco. Will post again as soon as I have decided what needs messing with first.
