As above on my disco 2
I originally thought it was the fuel splashing against the tank lol
It sounds like its from that area and it happens once, in gear then as soon as my foot goes on the accelerator
My gears are quite stiff and to engage, my foot has to be pretty much to the ground. The car was sat for a year
Anyone had this?
I'm not to bothered but don't want to lose a prop going down the road

Two thoughts

1, RE stiff gears. When was the last time the gear oil was changed and was the right oil used?

2, Sounds like backlash, how much free play is there in the propshafts??

I assume you've not noticed any gear slip???

When I first got my 2006 TD5 Defender last year, it often had a distinct 'clunk' on taking up drive (clutch up, accelerator down) particularly if I was changing gear in a hurry. Thinking there was a lot of slack in the suspension linkages I started assembling the various bits and pieces to tackle this. I got a load of new nuts and bolts and was intending to shell out for a Superpro bush set, but on replacing my drive flanges I find that the clunk is more or less gone. I expect I will replace bushes and central ball joint at some point but it's not urgent any more.

But of course, it's always good to check for slack in the propshaft joints anyway. I wobble the propshafts as a matter of course evey time I'm underneath.

The clutch was changed a few years back, but it's due a service anyway
I'm going to check the props aswell, is it a case of tightening them or will I need a new bush of sort?
No gear slip

Nope.

Check for loose play in your front and rear prop uj's first

You may find whilst you've been checking the uj's one or more of the prop shafts has a some play in it. Normally the front one

Parently what I call the "drive flange" is at the hub. The bit I was on about will be either the transfer box output drive flange or the diff input drive flange. ;)

If they're all ok then check the hub drive flanges if they're ok it gets way more complicated as the wear could be in the front CV's, either/both front or back Diffs, gear box and or transfer box

Dont panic yet it's much more likely to be in the earlier metioned items ;)

Yes, it's the hubs I was on about too. I know some people tend to change flanges and half shafts as matched sets, but I've kept the half shafts as their splines didn't seem to be worn whereas the splines in the flanges were distinctly sawtooth-shaped. Anyway, it quietened my clunk down a lot.

The other item that wears is the splines in the propshafts. See whether they seem to be slack at all.
