Hi all, just getting an 05 TD4 HSE Auto 79800 miles.

I'd like to give it a basic service but can't afford a LR Dealer to do it.

Will someone please let me know the key items for checking/replacement ?

Fuel filter, oil and oil filter, air filter are the basic starting points.

What other filters/breathers etc need checking/replacing/cleaning ?

Also, is there a printable service schedule available anywhere ? The only ones I've found are vry small when printed.

replace and upgrade to a bmw crank shaft breather and do you pollen filter too

Here you go -

A link to the LR service check list - handy to print out and keep a record of what's to be done and when.

The pcv filter does not appear in LR service schedule - a major omission.

Do a search on here for pcv or as BMW call it an Oil Separator - loads of info, part numbers and detailed job descriptions. Get the real thing from a BMW agent - £23.

Dire results of neglecting this filter/separator.

It is.

I havent got one to hand, but i think its refered to as Cylone filter or Crankcase Breather.

It is definately on the sheet though

I dont think it was added to the service sheets until about 2003/4 ish, when the turbo's started blowing up.

Here's a combined list of all things I think now should be done/replaced as a minimum. I just want to ensure I get started right.

Can someone please confirm and advise any extras ?

4. Pollution Control Valve (PCV, also referred to as Oil Separator)
5. Crankcase Breather (or is this also called the PCV ?)

Automatic Gearbox Oil replacement if not already done so at 60k ?

Break fluid replacement maybe ? (not sure it this is necessary as have never done on any vehicle I have owned)

Crankcase breather / PCV / Cyclone Filter / Oil Seperator are all the same thing.

Scrap the pollution control valve, as i think you made that up and change it to Pollen filter.

Also add in Turbo Modulator Filter

Definately gonna do that Crockett, I always get one for each vehicle I own.

I get the Freelander on August 3rd, by that time I'll have one, hopefully cheaper on eBay than Halfords...............ebt

If there is no service history then a good start would be to change oil fluids and filters and auxiliary driver belts..plus what's mentioned above

Actually Richard, there is an excellent history up to 48 and the cars done 79k. Apparently the owner (1 owner car) was an engineer and he "did the rest himself". I just want belt and braces cover so plan to change engine oil and all the components I've listed here. I believe I remember reading that the auto box transmission fluid was changed at 48k, but I will check that.

I've never changed break fluid in any car. I realise it's hygroscopic and was wondering what's your view ?

Can't believe the price of Haynes manuals at Halfords now. £20.99 !!!

Much cheaper, new, on eBay.

Get the brake fluid changed as well !

Hygroscopic just mean it absorbs water and obviously hydraulic fluid with water saturation isnt a good thing.

The turbo modulator filter is behind the airbox just dangling and they are a couple of quid for a new one. Definately worth changing. Google it and im sure there is alot of information out there, that is easy to find.

How about coolant and diff oils? Wiper blades all round make a car much nicer to drive daily too.. Check brake pads and rear shoes too.
