Hi
My internal bit in my key fob for my 97 discovery 300tdi is only working due to a piece of silver foil connecting the terminals.
Can i buy just the internal bit and if so will it need to go to a dealer to be programmed

Thanks

you should be able to buy a new keyfob and program it yourself...

What year is your disco???

Sorry, dumb moment there! a 97 should be a two button fob, there should be a frequency sticker on the board of the fob. You need a board of the same frequency, try ebay, then you need to teach the car the new fob - fun!

This is how you pair the new fob... :)

HANDSET INITIALISATION
NOTE: New handsets are supplied in pairs.
If a new handset is required, it will require
initialisation to the ECU using the
following procedure:
1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.
3. Switch ignition ON.
4. Switch ignition OFF.
5. Lock doors.
6. Unlock doors.
7. Release bonnet switch.
8. Switch ignition ON.
9. Switch ignition OFF.
If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.
10. Press and hold down button on first handset until
dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have
been initialised correctly.

All the above is for a single fob. Two button fobs are not user programable. They use a different security protocol.

Hi Lerk

I have noticed that part of the routine is missing from this list.

Having carried out this procedure numerous times I am pretty sure the between no.s 7 and 8 in the list the door lock and unlock has to be performed again.

oops, sorry! is it possible with the two button fobs then?

Hi lerk,
Yes you can buy the two button fobs from LR (they have a part no.) or companies such as remote key or even used ones from ebay...but they will have to be programed by a LR dealer or companies that do that sort of thing ie. remote key they require VIN and/or the alarm ecu id and hopefully the owners id :)

More info and what is involved Remote Key Fob Replacement
