Good evening all.

Reet, here goes for this evenings quandary.

I will be off to the scottish borders this weekend to collect a 110 CSW with a trailer as the 110 is SORNed.

Travelling from the midlands I appreciate it's a fair old way but i'm quite looking forward to the road trip.

Question is....has anyone got any tips on how to make sure the 110 stays on the trailer for the trip back?

e.g, how many ratchet straps, where would you put them, anything else I might need to know.

I don't have a problem with the weight or the trailer as I am an experienced articulated lorry driver but what does make my nuts throb is making sure the thing stays on the trailer for the trip back.

proper fasten down with chains and binders, or hold down ratchet/ straps rated for correct weight

I've got about five 5 tonne ratchet straps.

So ratchet down the axles or to the body through the chassis?

I prefer to use 4 small straps as if one snaps (unlikely) you have 3 others to compensate if you don't notice

What I do is put the hook on a hook on the trailer, go straight behind the tyre to the other side if the tyre then pull the loose end around the back of the hook side of the strap and tigheten on the other side creating a cross with the centre in the middle of the wheel this pulls forwards, backwards, towards the edge of the trailer and down. Do this on every wheel and you'll have no problems. Leave in reverse with handbrake on obviously

axles they are stonger than body panels

I would strap each wheel as suggested then one through the recovery eyes ok the front of the chassis going forewords and then one around the rear towball going backwards, she isn't going to shift then

Only very slightly the suspension compensates well could have been an inch or two further back but there was no snaking, pushing or any problems at all. Not perfect but damn good enough. Plus it was only 40 miles

+1 on that tail wag waiting to happen, If loaded properly should tow at 80MPH no problem

Should, but legally can't do over 60 and I would like to be going at 80 while towing, especially with a potential live load

Nope but have been loading trailer for the past couple if years and seen and felt the results of badly loaded trailers

slightly, I would move it back 6-8" as the front of the 110 looks a little high. Just my opinion, got over 1.5 million miles under my arse

Slightly different on a big rig where the weight presses down more on the rear wheels rather than levering behind the axle but still. The disco was low at the back as it was turned off and so the extra weight pushed the air out it soon righted when it was turned on again

Also on a hgv trailer the axles are at the rear so there is very little if any weight behind the pivot point of the axles, whereas on a standard trailer the axles are central so there is a far greater distance of bed away from the axles so it is more sensitive to being oddly loaded
