Hi all, picked my Td4 this morning, seems an ok motor for £1500, engine sounds good and pulls well on acceleration, did the reversing on full lock test and there was no noticeable tightness-in fact it felt smooth and free, there are of course a couple of niggly things which I've picked up on so far, one being that the remote fob doesn't work at all and has worn/damaged buttons, I will of course check and change the battery (got loads at work!) and on using the key to unlock the car the passenger side doesn't unlock but does unlock using the switch on the console and the second is a intermittent noise from what I think is the propshaft-basically you can be driving at say 35mph and hear a rumbling..ease off or accelerate and it goes away then go back to that speed and there's no noise, this happened also at about 55 on the motorway..accelerated to past 60 and it stopped, it didn't feel the same as out of balance wheels do at certain speeds but sounded prop related, now the thing is the car was in a local LR specialist for a new front propshaft less than 1000miles ago and it's not unreasonable to assume that the rear would have been checked at the same time (although you can't guarantee that of course), naturally I need to climb under and check bolts etc and grease joints if necessary but that will have to wait as I'm still recovering from having my gallbladder out.

have a look at you tyres that might be the rumbling noise they all need to be the same make and size with the newer ones on the back hope this helps

They definately aren't all the same at the moment, I've pretty well cleaned out the bank account buying the car so if I can eliminate worn UJs etc and that's the most likely cause then I may have to park her up until I can change the rubber.
 
Looks a smart motor. Did you check that the rear prop was still there? Best way is to assume nothing and check everything. If you look on e-bay you can get replacement cases for the remote fob quite cheaply. Often the battery is flat but sometimes the battery clip can come away from the PCB - it's a easy resolder job though. Hope you have some fun with it.
 
Hi mate, yes I did look underneath and rear prop is in place, if I buy a new fob what's the procedure for programming it?.
 
With regard to the mis-matched tyres - this is a risk. Not everyone would agree with me but if you can't stretch to a new set then get 2 dressmakers tape measures, staple them together, and measure the circumference of each tyre whilst they are in the air at the correct pressure. If you have a difference of more than around 15-20mm in circumference then put the bigger two on the rear axle.
 
Thanks for all your suggestions guys, I do understand that transmission damage can occur with mis-matched tyres but is it normal for that to account for the type of of rumbling I'm hearing?

If you can't get the rubber replaced at the mo, don't park her up! Remove the propshafts and enjoy her - just not on stuff that's too slippery!

I suppose you'd have to let your party pooper insurance co. know though!

re the rumbling - I'm not sure what it is, but if you took the props off and ran like that for a bit - if the noise continues, you know its something left on the car! If it stops, it may be something you took off, or less stresses on remaining parts - like IRD/Diff.
 
Your freelander looks well , mismatched tyres will kill a freelander drivetrain , I had I drone at 50 to 60 and my vcu was very hot when I touched it , matched all 4 tyres same size/make/model and that cured it , take heed on this , many, many, owners have been mislead on this by garages including main dealers !
 
Going to check with local tyre bay tomorrow on prices and availability but may still have to wait until payday, in the mean time if I were to remove the prop temporarily would I need to go as far as taking out the drive piece that fits into the IRD body and therefore need a blanking plate kit or will just taking off the prop shaft suffice?.
