Any ideas what a 1989 Range Rover Classic would be worth with a shot chassis. It has a GMC V8 Diesel 6.2 Litre fitted, which has covered less than 80k, and the gear box, and diffs have had 3k spent on totally upgrading everything to a heavy duty set up, conversion carried in 1999 by Ian Ashcroft, but it has been dry stored since 2001 when it failed its MOT due to rot on the wings,and was going to be stripped. Its my friends RRC and he states that he has all the bills for it, and wants rid. Offered him £800, which he stated he would accept. I reckon for another £1500 with new chassis, and parts I could have an amazing go any where classic.
Does anybody know what these engines are likem and what Ian Ashcorft converstions are like. Quite looking forward to building the perfect classic, as I know parts are cheap on e-bay. Would a monster engine like this be economical, compared to a petrol V8.
 
a lot of thread on here sez the big 6.2 is a no-no it just trashes every thing in the drive.But no experience personally
 
If it's the nonturbo engine they return a reasonable 25/30mpg. you'll need an auto box as the torque will eat driveshafts otherwise. The torque converter takes most of the sting out it. There's a guy selling a really nice Disco with one fitted on www.hull4x4.com for £2850 that doesn't need anything spending on it.
 
He's a squadie, and lives in Birmingham now, still waiting on pics of the rangey as I have never seen it, and havent had a chance to take a look at her. I think the reason he spent so much on the gear box, and stuff is because of the power. I dont think it is the turbo model.

I did 6 months contract work in Houston Texas.
I had a 2006 Ford 6.0L F250 truck for 6 months in Houston.
they are V8 turbo diesel.

Sh1t, man that thing was heavy on fuel.
I never got above 17mpg, and that was driving like Miss Daisy !

Im'e sorry to burst the bubble, but 25 ~ 30 isn't going to happen on this planet.
 
That was a turbo this is a non turbo. there's no comparison Oh and you were dragging 3.5 tonne heap of **** around as well
 
oh and the figures for this engine aren't even close to the ones for the ****box ford

A standard 2.5tdi is 111bhp and 195lb/ft torque which is less than the 6.2 at 143bhp and 257lb/ft torque, the 3.9 petrol V8 is 181bhp and 230lb/ft. Remember it is torque that effects acceleration. Its not a massive amount more I know but it is how and when it is delivered that counts, the 2.5tdi has to spin up to speed, floor one from standstill and not much happens untill the revs get high then there is a mad few seconds of 195ft/lb and 111bhp then it hits the limiter and you have to change gear and it all happens again.... The 6.2 has a nearly flat torque curve from tickover to 3600rpm the acceleration is instant and linier, much more like the 3.9 but because the revs are lower in the diesel it pulls better.
 
Yep hence the the reason you get 25/30mpg out of it. because the thing will probably never get above 2k rpm. unlike a **** box ford tank.
 
Well the trail for a replacement landy continues as my mate has decided to strip the range for its parts. He reckons he can get around £1k for the engine and around the same for the ZF gear box and Ian Ashcroft goodies including diffs, and transfer box.
What he didnt tell me originally was that the whole Rangey was shot other than the engine and drive train.
Still hunting for a new landy but keep changing my mind and cant decided what I want.
I fancy some thing daft, as its only going to be a toy, but its got to be economical, and reliable.
