Well........ my landrover 90 is a 1997 and it doesn't KLUNK with weight transfer - so my A frame ball joint is fine - thanks for asking :)

You say there fine and new etc but have you taken them off and gone for a short drive in diff lock?

Obvioulsy one at a time, before some clever dick pipes in :p :lol:
 
Thats what i thought as well as it sounds exactly the same but i suppose a clunking noise is the same as any other clunking noise :rolleyes:. Im still happy to go through the process of elimination so i might try that this weekend if i get the time
 
The prop idea from big ginger beard is a good one. Take the props off one at a time, diff lock in and take it for a drive. And if you have taken one of the props off, its ok to drive on the road, and you wont get wind up. I raced my 90 in 2WD when it threw a prop. Still came 3rd lol.
 
Great thread. I've got exactly the same problem but after ruling out UJs I put it down to "user error" and my sh1t clutch control as I don't get the clonk it if I'm really gentle with the gear change (which is boring and almost impossible).

What are your engine mounts like?

I'm going to check my clutch and A-frame as advised above - thanks for the tips. Helpful diagram here: Defender A Frame Bushes - Technical - Cape Land Rover Club News Site

I only get the clunk when changing gear and engaging 'power', so not when I'm slowing down or shifting down.

Ah see i get the clunk when im slowing down too which as Daz suggested would be weight transfer therefore could be the A frame balljoint. My engine and gearbox mounts are fine and i know im not driving it like i hired it, gotta look after it seeing as it is getting on a bit ;).

When i get round to getting my balljoint changed ill let you know if its made any difference.
 
In case it helps anyone, even at the risk of opening up an old thread, my clunking turned out to be mangled yokes on my rear prop. Replaced the prop and clunking has all but gone - now just need to replace my heavy left foot with one that can control a clutch properly...
 
Worn splines on output shaft of gearbox will cause what's happening, undo pto cover on tbox and you will be able to see the play in the output shaft and tbox input gear.
Two fixes
1, new gearbox and input gear
2, if your lucky and the main shaft isnot worn to bad, a new drilled input gear
