No need for jetwash just a small paintbrush and a spray bottle.
Spray on leave for 10 mins rubbing in with brush if its thick stuff and then a gentle rinse with a watering can or hosepipe.
smells good too!! (Honest!!)
Failing that jetwash the bugger and then call the AA to get you back home so you dry out the BECM thingy.

Have heard of gunk but you havent seen how much oil there is got to be at least a liter over the top of the engine pipes steering box rad all the way down to the bottom. The valve had gone before with the last owner and they havent bothered to get it off so its now caked on with loads of crap.

If there's lots of crud just put a bit more gunk on and get in with the brush.
A bit of effort needed but really worth it in the long run.

Like the glass half full approach. That'll be another job I've got done today, i'm doing well.
Thing is thought these cars were supposed to be able to go anywhere or is it just as long as you don't get them wet

The problem with jet washing is the force the water is coming out of the nozzle, this can cause water the penetrate electrical components and sometimes even seals. The vehicle is designed to wade through water at reasonable levels with no problem but remember that water and electrics never mix well. Either buy one of those pump sprayers gardeners use for plants and fill with gunk, spray engine, work with brush and then rinse and fill with water to wash gunk off, or use watering can/slow hosepipe as described before and make sure you stay well away from any wiring. I would only ever jet wash from below the engine with the nozzle facing upwards but this can create its own issues, steam cleaning with a true steam cleaner is different in that there is no real pressure and the results are good but you still have to be aware of the amount of heat that will be placed on some of the components. I guess the moral here is tread carefully and take your time.
