Hi, I need some decent recovery points for off roading, my 90 is standard at the min so have looked at jate rings which seem cheap and easy, But are these really upto the job? They seem to simple to be true? Also I know rated ones are the ones to go for, anyone have any recommendations where to get a decent set, don't want an eBay special that someone made in there shed, but would buy from a reputable seller on eBay. Any help appreciated.
 
Jate rings will do the job fine. I've got a couple of D-ring plates that attach to the top of the chassis where the bumper meets it, they're a bit easier to attach ropes to if you get stuck !
 
Cheers mark. I like there made by a name I recognise too, and if you've used them successfully that's good enough for me. Thanks fatboy, I had seen them looking around but seem like they would be a bit more work to fit. If a jate ring will do the job I'll just go for a couple of them, planning on a steering guard in a few months anyway so will sort a more permanent recovery point then.

As I said, they've been invaluable to me since I fitted them.
They've even recovered a very stuck fire engine from a muddy field earlier on this year! :D
 
Should be plenty to pull my 90 out of a puddle then. Lol. Do you know if one will fit on the rear with the tow bar still attached?

Any snatch recovery comes with risk because of the forces involved and should only be used with extreme caution and imo only as a last resort.

Tow balls have been known to fail though I've never seen it myself

Snatch recoveries put huge stresses on parts that weren't designed for it. Most tow balls are rated at 3.5t which will be a swl, that generally means they have a failure point 3 times that. I'm no engineer though! At least they have a swl.
Kinetic ropes are the cause of more flying metal than anything else I recon.
Never seen a ball hitch fail, just the metal it's bolted to. Nato hitch's do lots of damage as they're much heavier.

SWL is 50% of mean failure load but yep......your a lot more likely to pull bolts through or rip bits off.

There was a discussion a while back about this and someone....Jai iirc said about tow balls failing but the general consensus was they're fine for general recovery (with spreader)....not upto competition stuff though

i have seen a tow ball come off, whilst being used with a kinetic rope, very nasty, If you have a drop hitch why not put a shackle through one of the holes.

I use a nato hitch but i dont like kinetic ropes so only ever get winched out if required.

Far to much force's in use with kinetics and if there not used properly there dangerous
