Hi all,
Can anyone help?
My Freelander has been stood for the past 3 weeks in the drive and when I came to drive it today the Rear Offside wheel had jammed on.
Now I know there are other threads on similar issues but the crazy thing is that it drove ok in reverse but jammed up solid in forward drive. (By the way the car is a TD4 Automatic).
Is it just a matter of the Handbrake not releasing properly or could it be something more expensive?
Eventually I did get it to release but will it happen again and again?
I"ve parked it up now with the handbrake off and I"ll see what happens next time I come to drive it, but in the meantime any help or advice would be appreciated. At my age(over 70) I dont relish the idea of clambering underneath the car but I will have to if that"s what needs doing to rectify the problem.

it sounds like a broken or jammed shoe return spring, only taking the drum off to inspect will tell you for sure
 
You must have missed it's an auto, MHM.

The OP can survive safely long enough without a handbrake - I don't use mine for weeks during the winter when it's below freezing here in the far far North. LOL

I agree with the advice to take the drum off and see whether it's a spring problem or a de-laminated lining which is the other common problem.

I never use my hand brake. It's used twice a year, once just before the Mot to test it then the actual Mot! I use park the rest of the time.
 
Hi again,
Took the drum off today and bar for a hell of a mess with brake dust, everything looks OK. Cleaned it all out and refitted it and fingers crossed it seems to be OK.
In future I will leave the handbrake off whenever I park it up for any long period of time.
