Evening all.first up its a 1996(p) 300tdi discovery manual. r380 gearbox with a lt230 transfer box. Ok so i had a clunking coming from what i thought was the front prop. The uj's were passed it to be fair, but can't get any until tomorrow. So when i put it into difflock to move it round the front there was still the same clunk when i clutched in or let it out. Popped it back into high normal(so no movement when the clutch was released) and it still does it. My question is am i right in thinking its the transfer box that's giving up.Also had a real bad vibration just under 30mph today from the way home from the school run

If it will only move in diff lock then a half shaft, cv or diff has gone.

agree with tottot

drop the trans fer box out of lock and get a freind to lay on the floor and watch the prop shafts and see whitch one spins thet gives you the axel then time to get stripping.

then worry about the transferbox, maybe drop the oil to see if you have big fhunks of metal its time to strip and assess

thats what exactly happened to my defender. passed the MOT driving home lost all drive. put diiflock in and drove fine. anyway dropped t box out and found output shaft on g box was knackered. so ended up with new g box and t boxx aswell as a new front axle. all fun with landrovers

unlucky how would diff lock get you home with failed output shaft on gear box you ususaly just change input gear in t/box when that happens £30

It drives fine with either in diff lock or normal, its just clunking. I thought it was the prop that was at fault but its still there even with the prop removed. The clunk is louder when in diff lock. Put it into diff lock just to move it as i've left the front prop off to replace the uj's. When i turn the front output drive flange on the t-box it sounds asthou its coming from both the g/box and the t/box?????. but either ways it still drives with or without the prop and will drive in normal high with the prop reinstalled.

it will clunk in diff lock with prop removed,have you removed pto cover to check splines

not yet pal no. what about the clunking when its not in difflock. thought it was bushes at first, so fully polybushed but still there. Also on the way home today a real bad vibration at around 28mph to the point where it felt like the whole car was shuddering. sorry for all the questions in advance

rear prop doughnut ,removing pto cover will tell you if boxes are at fault

ok will do pal. the rubber doughnut is brand new, checked that and its all good. Also checked the uj at the other end and has no play in it

well the output shaft wasnt completely gone just chewed up to hell. and i wouldnt be able to change input gear when out put shaft is chewed. and a mate of mine breaks landys so got t and g box cheap

Ok so replaced the uj however the clunk is still there. Have found that the n/s g/box mount is shot, and also the bearing on the front output on the transfer box has alot of play in it. Can this bearing be replaced whilst the t/box is still on the disco or is it t/box off and full strip down

Hi Alex, I would still be checking the A-frame ball-joint if I were you, the clunking on and off the clutch is a classic sign.

It's straightforward enough to change IF you jack up the chassis to gain access. There's a better than even chance that it will be rusted to **** - angle grinder time

.

When you replace it, you can buy adjustable HD ones from Paddocks, highly recommended.

i've tested the ball joint pal and its not that defo the transferbox thats clunking, even when you turn the output flanges by hand it does it, plus alot of play on the bearing. Anyways managed to pick up a realy good transferbox and gearbox today for £80 so happy at that

No pal leaving g/box and just dropping the the t/box off and swap over. To be honest don't want to really want to drive it much longer as its making some strange sounds. Feel free to drop me bumper off if you like thou lol

You will not put the landy t box in with your belly like you did the jeep one

I will drop it off when I finish it

Been working on Graham's Lexus for 2 days trying to find a wine from the rear

it's not the bold tyre (2 new fitted) not brakes, not wheel bearing

I will pop down Monday after I've serviced that gaylander

Thought about checking the diff on the back of the lexus pal with it being a rear drive car lol
