Hi there,
I am still looking for a Disco as my previous purchase fell through
frown.gif

I find myself looking for low mileage, 1 owner from new, no tow bar, facelift model and with passenger airbag. There does not seem to be a lot of these around, am I being too picky? They also all seem to be priced around the £7K mark.

My question: I read somewhere (on this forum I think) that Discoveries 2 seem to give a lot of trouble between 80,000 and 100,000 Miles. Is there any truth in this or is it just rubbish? The car I nearly bought had just over 60K miles, but now I decided to settle for 80K as cannot find any lower mileage ones.

You're being a right picky bugger……although my mates dad has one that he might sell soon which is on about 60k I think

Either way you're still being picky,

One owner from new ? Whats wrong with two or three ? Its a 9 year old car some people chop and change cars every 30k

No Towbar ? why ? Just because it has one doesn't mean its been used and they're useful protection, just check for sagging if its been towing a caravan or something, you'll see wear on the ball etc.

And with passenger airbag……well I'm pretty sure they all have full airbags as my 98 300tdi does
 
there is some truth that from around 80k things have worn out to the point where they need replacing, by about 120k all of the bits that are likely to wear have been replaced, things like water pump, fuel pump, alternators ect.
In my experience thats what I found with my D2 but of course its not always the case
 
mileage,owners,towbar it all means nothing whats more important is how it was looked after you get a 80k car with out any history with nothing done then its a bag of poop but a 150K with a detailed history with everything done when needed will be the better buy
 
One owner car means nothing, after all if they forked out over 20k for it when new they would probably begrudge paying out for stuff it needs as and when, I purchased mytd5 a few years back on the state of the actual car that was in front of me and the 3 boxes of history that came with it, it had been a daily whip for a company boss clocking up over 130k tramping up and down the m6 but drove and sounded better than some that had been described as "mint" 7k cars with lower mileage that were no where near as tight as this one .

Picky **** , Bet you're from down south . D2 will always play up at any milage , go on, be a man get 300 tdi and learn to weld , we all have !!!
 
Or do what I do, get a 300 and give it to your younger brother to weld :D

As for low mileage, I bought my BM when it was 2 year old with high mileage, all the service history and saved a fortune.

High miles dosnt always have to be bad
 
Mmmm dont think your made of the right stuff to be a land rover owner.part of the buzz of owning it is being prepared to fix it. not to impress the neighbours.
 
disco 2s arent particulary prone for expensive break downs ,i look after many 100k and above that have had very little trouble ,injector loom ,fpr ,the odd wheel bearing ,fuel pump ,pick one thats been looked after and good underneath ,its more important than mileage

First thing I did when looking for mine was get underneath and have a really good look before even taking any out for a drive, walked away from several seemingly mint looking ones that were in pretty bad shape at the rear around the fuel tank area of the chassis.
 
Mine is a 99 with 140000 on the clock tows a car transporter trailer every two weeks . Yes i have done work to it like shocks airbags clutch brakes but that realy is just normal wear & tear. So as the guys say forget mileage and number of owners just give it a dam good check over ie chassis at rear airbags & fuel tank no matter the age you gonna do work on it it`s a disco :rolleyes:
 
i am going to regret saying this bought mine on 68,000 its now on 101,000 air bags disc's pads and battery.So far so good yeah got to park it the right way round for rain or sunroof's leak (to lazy to fix) sorry forgot 5 tyres would of been 4 but wifey decided to come home with a side wall puncture on a tyre that wasn't a month old :frusty: Yeah might be the lucky one but after years in and around motor trade seem to have a knack of picking a good motor.
 
Whaddya want? The latest, most up-to-date Disco 2 has seen 8 years of life. If you want reliability go for something small, simple and new.

You have to dial into the running costs of a Disco 2 or 1 preventative work, and/or repairs. It's part of the package.

Thanks to all for your comments. The fact that I want to try and buy a good one does not mean that I am not prepared to fix it. Impress the neighbours??? Don't really care about my neighbours, rarely see them. If I wanted to impress them I can assure you that a 10 year old vehicle is hardly going to do it, most of them own shiny new toys. I want it for me, but after buying a Range Rover years back that was anything but a wise purchase, I want to get a decent motor this time round.

Is it so wrong to be picky when buying a used car, especially a Disco? From your comments I see that I might be picky about the wrong things - thanks for the tips.

Re TDI 300, I drove an automatic one and did not like it as much as the Disco 2.
 
I don't really understand the appeal of Disco 2s. Disco 1's, have proven off road ability, and they're cheap as chips. I would imagine my 98 xs isn't all that different to a 99 disco 2 apart from the light clusters etc.
D3s and 4s have the obvious appeal of being new and flashy.

But disco 2s? Alot more expensive and for what? Annoying air bag suspension, electrics that break every 20 minutes, and as J Clarkson puts it, still look like the range rovers rural, rather stupid cousin.
 
nowt wrong with abit of rot. Gives you something to do when everything else is working. While the d2 looks good, it has to many tricky gadgets on it for me. Bare bones basic 300 for me
